Description
Traxx Hauler is a line of heavy freight electric locomotives adapted to different standards (GOST, TSI, India, China and others) and climatic conditions and designed for round-the-clock 24/7 operation. According to the manufacturer, they are among the most powerful locomotives in the world: they haul trains weighing up to 10 000 t at up to 120 km/h, including on long international routes and in extreme weather. Tractive effort of up to 1400 kN is delivered by the bogie design and advanced adhesion control. Versions come with 6, 8 or 12 axles. The 1520 mm gauge version is built to GOST standards.
Track gauge is 1065, 1435, 1520 or 1668 mm, axle load 22–30 t, supply AC/DC, power up to 10.8 MW, tractive effort up to 1400 kN and speed up to 120 km/h. Continuous optimisation of the traction chain and energy recovery reduce energy consumption on every kilometre. Well-thought-out redundancy concepts and special measures for 24/7 operation, low temperatures, humidity, dust and snow support high availability.
More than 1000 locomotives have been sold on three continents, with four products and four plants close to customers. Assembly in Astana at the EKZ plant has been running since 2010, and it also serves Azerbaijan Railways. The plant in Madhepura produced the 300th locomotive for Indian Railways in 2023. In Durban, locomotives for Transnet have been built at local facilities since 2014.
For Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ), 250 Prima T8 KZ8A freight electric locomotives have been ordered (833 kN, 120 km/h, GOST standards, temperatures from −50 to +50 °C). Azerbaijan Railways ordered 40 Prima T8 AZ8A electric locomotives. For Indian Railways, 800 twin-section Prima T8 WAG-12 electric locomotives are planned. For Transnet, 240 single-section Traxx South Africa locomotives have been built for Cape gauge. For LKAB under the IORE project, 17 twin-section locomotives rated 10.8 MW and weighing 360 t were created for ore trains of over 9000 t in the conditions of northern Sweden.
