Description
The Coradia family offers battery and fuel cell traction, as well as options for converting existing trains to new traction (re-tractioning) with zero direct CO2 emissions, lower noise and intelligent energy management for short and long sections without overhead lines. According to the manufacturer, it is the only rail company with references for both hydrogen and battery trains in passenger service. The total mileage of trains with green traction exceeds 4 million km. The Mitrac H (hydrogen) and Mitrac B (battery) traction systems were developed by the company itself.
Coradia iLint is the world's first hydrogen train in passenger service, its only exhaust is water, and its range reaches 1000 km. The train has carried passengers in Austria and Germany (regular service at LNVG since 2022, operator EVB) and has been demonstrated in the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Saudi Arabia and Canada. The total mileage in passenger service has exceeded 200,000 km. 41 trains have been delivered to Germany, and the 2019 order from RMV became the world's largest fleet of fuel cell trains, which entered service in 2022.
Coradia Stream H is a regional fuel cell train based on the Coradia Stream electric multiple unit. Six trains for the Lombardy region, the first hydrogen trains in Italy, were due to enter service in 2025. The hydrogen tanks and fuel cells are housed in the power car. When hydrogen from renewable sources is used, greenhouse gas emissions are eliminated.
Coradia Continental BEMU is a battery electric multiple unit with a range of up to 120 km. It runs both under overhead lines and on non-electrified sections without new infrastructure, the high-performance batteries are on the roof, and speed in battery mode reaches 160 km/h. Saxony has ordered 11 such trains for 80 km of track without overhead lines between Chemnitz and Leipzig. The Coradia iLint project for LNVG received the European Railway Award 2021. Such trains can be considered an alternative to diesel trains on non-electrified lines, and hydrogen trains are refuelled at the depot or at a station.
