Description
The manufacturer's approach to traction power supply rests on the interaction of onboard and wayside equipment. The energy a train returns during regenerative braking is sent back by the system to supply auxiliary equipment of substations and stations. The saving is achieved across the whole railway system, not for a single train. The equipment covers three levels of the network, namely AC traction substations, DC traction substations and station facilities of metros and railways.
At AC traction substations, incoming switchgear rated 145–550 kV is fitted with spring-operated mechanisms of the torsion type, which features high energy transmission efficiency. Feeder transformers with the roof delta (RD) connection simplify substation connection and configuration, have low weight and take up less space. Control and protection panels of the ME type improve operating convenience and reduce maintenance labour.
DC substations receive digital control and protection systems with self-diagnostics, so less maintenance staff is needed. Power is received and distributed by compact cubicle-type gas-insulated switchgear (C-GIS) that complies with the current IEC standards. Rectifier units (rectiformer) combine a shell-type transformer with a dense arrangement of silicon valves and high-voltage elements. This layout reduces the footprint and the losses in the unit.
Regenerative inverters convert train braking energy into AC for auxiliary equipment. They operate stably even when the amount of regenerative energy changes sharply. Feeder cells contain high-speed air-insulated DC circuit breakers. The cells are compact, safe in operation, break the circuit quickly and have increased switching capacity.
The S-EIV (Station Energy Saving Inverter) is intended for stations. It passes surplus regenerative energy into the station power supply network, where it is consumed by station equipment. Station power is switched by 7.2 kV switchgear with combined dry-air insulation that contains no greenhouse gases. The condition monitoring function (CBM, Condition Based Maintenance) detects deviations at an early stage, so maintenance is planned according to the actual state of the apparatus. Together, the S-EIV inverter and this switchgear reduce the energy consumption of station buildings.

Questions and answers
What voltages are the incoming devices of AC substations rated for?
Incoming circuit breakers with a torsion spring mechanism are made for 145–550 kV. Feeder transformers have the roof delta (RD) connection.
What does the station inverter S-EIV do?
S-EIV passes surplus energy from regenerative train braking into the station power supply network. Station equipment uses this energy.
What switchgear is offered for station facilities?
7.2 kV switchgear with combined dry-air insulation and no greenhouse gases. It has a condition monitoring function for early fault detection.
