Traction motor-gearbox units for trams, electric trains and locomotives
Complete traction drives in the form of motor-gearbox units consisting of an induction traction motor, a coupling and a gearbox. The units are supplied for light rail, multiple-unit rolling stock and locomotives. The manufacturer is responsible for the whole drive and for matching the motor to the mechanical part.

Description
A motor-gearbox unit combines the traction motor, coupling and gearbox in one assembly. The units are designed in close cooperation with leading makers of traction gearboxes and couplings, while the motor manufacturer acts as the single-source supplier of the entire drive. The car builder receives a ready-made assembly with a single point of responsibility for its operation. Many years of experience in traction engineering make it possible to build custom units that combine high power with tight limits on mass and space in the bogie. For low-floor trams it is these limits that determine the layout.
Structurally, single- and double-bearing motors with a gearbox are offered. The longitudinal layout comes with a twin motor, axle drive or wheel drive, and the transverse one is made with axle drive. The scheme is chosen to suit the bogie design and the available space. In the longitudinal layout the motor axis runs along the car, in the transverse one parallel to the wheel axle. The motors are cooled by water, forced ventilation or self-ventilation with surface cooling and an open circuit. Water cooling removes more power from a motor of the same size, while self-ventilation simplifies the design.
The motors used are induction traction machines rated 45–1800 kW for 400–3000 V with class 200 insulation. This insulation class is designed for a high operating temperature of the windings. Examples include single and twin motor-gearbox units for trams. For the DT 8.12 light rail vehicles of the Stuttgart Stadtbahn the manufacturer developed a motor to the order of the Berlin car builder and supplies ready-made units. The units are built and tested at the plant in Dresden, which holds certification for welding of railway vehicles under EN 15085-2 and an ISO 9001 quality management system.
The units are suitable for manufacturers and overhaul companies of rolling stock for new trams and electric trains. They are also used to replace obsolete traction drives with DC motors by three-phase ones. An induction drive has no commutator or brushes, which on DC motors require regular maintenance. The traction range includes drives for high- and low-floor trams, metro and suburban trains, electric locomotives and diesel locomotives with electric transmission, high-speed trains and special track machines. Sales and engineering of traction machines are handled by a separate division specialising in motors and generators for transport.

Questions and answers
What is the power of the traction motors in the motor-gearbox units?
The traction range covers induction motors rated 45–1800 kW for 400–3000 V. Insulation corresponds to class 200.
What layout options are offered for the units?
There are single- and double-bearing motors with a gearbox in the longitudinal layout (twin motor, axle or wheel drive) and in the transverse layout with axle drive. Cooling is by water, forced ventilation or self-ventilation.
To what standards are the units built and tested?
The units are assembled and tested at the plant in Dresden, certified for welding of railway vehicles under EN 15085-2. The plant's quality management system complies with ISO 9001.
