Traction gear units (gearboxes) and TD (disc, C-FRP) and WN couplings for rolling stock bogies

The traction drive of a bogie includes gear units and TD and WN flexible couplings that transmit torque from the traction motor to the wheelset. Gearboxes are built with a solid or split housing, with vertical or diagonal suspension. They are used on Shinkansen trains, in metros, on trams and on monorails.

parallel cardan with a solid shaft, on the bogie
Gearbox housing

Suspension

Description

The gear unit and couplings transmit torque from the traction motor to the wheelset and complete the traction drive, which the manufacturer supplies as a set, from the current collector to the gearbox. The gearboxes are designed for the high power and large torques of modern rolling stock and for severe conditions, including starting in severe frost. The tooth profile is optimized to reduce noise. Many years of design and production experience make it possible to work in such conditions. The gearboxes are fitted on Shinkansen, suburban and metro trains, on ultra-low-floor trams and on monorails.

The housing can be split, in which case the axle is easy to replace, or solid, which is simpler in design. Materials are cast steel, high-strength ductile iron (FCD), which reduces noise, or a light aluminum alloy for high-speed rolling stock. The gearbox suspension in the bogie is vertical or diagonal.

For a high-speed line with a 1435 mm gauge, a solid vertically suspended gearbox of aluminum alloy is given (gear ratio 81/29 = 2.79, wheel diameter 860 mm, maximum speed 300 km/h). For urban lines with a 1067 mm gauge, a solid diagonally suspended gearbox of high-strength iron is given (gear ratio 97/16 = 6.06, wheel 860 mm, up to 120 km/h). Both work in a parallel cardan drive with a solid shaft. Gauge, wheel diameter, gear ratio and maximum speed are the source data for selecting a gearbox for a particular bogie.

The flexible couplings transmit torque from the motor to the gearbox without runout and misalignment. They compensate for changes in car mass and center of gravity during running, while remaining compact and easy to maintain in the limited space of the bogie. Two-disc TD couplings with flexible plates need no lubrication, and the flexible plates of high-strength, highly elastic carbon fiber C-FRP compensate for large displacements. The version with a built-in cover closes the plates with a flange, reduces noise and does not need a coupling cover on the motor side. Open two-disc couplings for urban lines and trams and WN gear couplings for trams are also built.

Questions and answers

What gear ratios do the example gearboxes have?

For a high-speed line with a 1435 mm gauge the gear ratio is 81/29 = 2.79 and the maximum speed is 300 km/h. For urban lines with a 1067 mm gauge the ratio is 97/16 = 6.06 and the speed is up to 120 km/h.

What materials are the gearbox housings made of?

The housing is made of cast steel, high-strength ductile iron (FCD) or a light aluminum alloy for high-speed rolling stock. It can be split or solid.

How do the TD and WN couplings differ?

TD couplings are two-disc flexible-plate couplings with C-FRP carbon fiber plates and need no lubrication. WN couplings are gear couplings used on trams.
