TMW — liquid-cooled traction induction motor 50–173 kW

TMW is a series of liquid-cooled traction induction motors rated 50–173 kW. Heat is carried away through the stator jacket into the car's liquid circuit, so the motor is compact and quiet. The motors work in trams, metro, service locomotives and track machines, often paired with a gearbox from the same manufacturer.

Description

The TMW has no fan and no air ducts. The liquid circuit removes heat from the stator, so for its small size the motor delivers a high power density and runs very quietly. Such machines are chosen where there is little space in the bogie and noise requirements are strict, that is, in low-floor trams, small-profile metro cars and special machines. The enclosed housing with no external air exchange does not draw in dust and moisture from under the car.

The motor is a three-phase induction machine with a squirrel-cage rotor, optimised for inverter supply. The insulation is class 220, and the housing is fully enclosed with a degree of protection of IP6K9K. The TMW is often supplied together with a gearbox from the same manufacturer as a single traction drive, with GFH gearboxes for trams and GMK for metro. According to the reference lists, TMW versions have a voltage of 398–832 V, a maximum rotational speed of up to 8124 rpm and a mass of 144–690 kg.

The lightest TMW in the references, the TMW 28-17-4 at 50 kW and 144 kg, is fitted to Bombardier Flexity trams in Vienna. The TMW 28-23-4 at 68 kW and 8124 rpm runs in the Stadler metro in Glasgow together with the GMK 2-101-383A gearbox, and there the motor and gearbox are supplied by one manufacturer. The TMW 32-22-4 at 100 kW runs on Tramlink in Lugano and Gmunden, and the TMW 31-38-4 at 110 kW in the Vienna U6 metro and on a Hamburger Hochbahn service locomotive. The tram-trains of Aarhus have the TMW 32-43-4 at 135 kW, and the Plasser & Theurer E3 hybrid track machine received the TMW 45A-32-6 at 173 kW.

The series covers trams and tram-trains, metro cars, service locomotives and track machines. The manufacturer's public data gives almost nothing on service life and efficiency; characteristics are given per project. To select a motor, the customer gives the manufacturer the duty cycles and the results of traction calculations. From these the manufacturer calculates energy consumption and winding temperatures and confirms that the version is suitable for specific routes. The motors are designed, built and tested at the manufacturer's own test station in Wiener Neudorf. The Long-Life Value Service is available for the whole service life, with an exchange pool, repair and modernisation.
