Description
The central element of the onboard complex is the train control and monitoring system TCMS. It runs on high-speed Ethernet according to international standards, exchanges data with wayside equipment and collects monitoring data. Condition based maintenance (CBM) is built on these data, where a unit is serviced when it is really needed.
VVVF inverters regulate the voltage and frequency supplying the traction motors. Silicon carbide (SiC) power devices reduce losses and with them the energy consumption, volume and weight of the equipment. Traction induction motors have cassette-type bearing units, run more quietly and need no cleaning, so maintenance time is reduced. Gears with vertical suspension are easier to assemble and service, and they are checked on test benches. Low-noise WN gear couplings with an optimised tooth profile run quietly during coasting. The manufacturer supplies motors, gears and inverters as a set, so the matching of the whole drive is done by a single producer.
SynTRACS combines a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) with a SiC inverter. The rotor has no conductors, so rotor losses are lower. During coasting there are no losses in the steel and no EMF is induced, so a motor disconnecting contactor can be omitted and maintenance safety increases. The motor contains no rare-earth metals, which lowers supply risks. For operation at higher currents, low-loss SiC devices are used, and the development received the R&D 100 award.
For AC rolling stock, SiC inverters and converters and naturally air-cooled traction transformers are produced, which save energy and make less noise. For high-speed trains the company offers traction transformers of its own design with reduced oil volume, smaller dimensions and lower weight. They were developed on the experience of the Shinkansen.
The onboard product range also includes auxiliary power supplies, brake control units, ATS, ATC and CBTC safety devices, ATO automatic train operation and air conditioners, including those using the natural refrigerant R290. The company has made braking equipment for over 90 years. SiC modules are also used in air conditioners, which reduce size and raise efficiency.

Questions and answers
How does SynTRACS differ from an induction traction drive?
SynTRACS uses a SynRM synchronous reluctance motor with no conductors in the rotor and no rare-earth metals. During coasting it induces no EMF, so a motor disconnecting contactor is not needed.
What cooling do the traction transformers have?
For AC rolling stock the transformers are made with natural air cooling. For high-speed trains there are transformers with reduced oil volume, dimensions and weight.
Which train safety systems are part of the onboard complex?
The range includes ATS, ATC and CBTC devices and ATO automatic train operation. Data are exchanged through the TCMS on Ethernet according to international standards.
