Description
Electrical equipment for Japanese Shinkansen high-speed trains has been supplied since 1964, starting with the first series 0, and also for the traction systems of series 100, 300, 700, N700 and N700A trains. The traction system comprises a main (traction) transformer, a main converter (rectifier-inverter) and traction induction motors. It is built on power electronics and control technologies and designed around the principles of reducing noise for passengers and residents along the line, raising efficiency and cutting energy consumption, reducing mass and dimensions for the limited under-floor space, and maximum reliability with reduced maintenance.
An example is the main circuit of the Shinkansen N700A train. Power is supplied from a single-phase 25 kV 60 Hz overhead line. The main transformer is rated 5150 kVA, with secondary windings of 1520 V, 847 A and a tertiary winding of 450 kVA for auxiliary needs. The main converter consists of a three-level PWM rectifier and a three-level PWM inverter with a 3000 V DC link. The power devices are 3.3 kV 1.2 kA IGBTs, with switching frequencies of 1500 Hz and 1000 Hz respectively. The traction induction motors are rated 305 kW, 2300 V, 100 A, 110 Hz and 3260 rpm (maximum 5720 rpm).
The development of the technology is visible in its history. A diode rectifier with DC motors corresponded to a speed of 210 km/h, a thyristor rectifier to 220 km/h, a GTO converter with induction motors to 270 km/h, and IGBT converters to 285–300 km/h. Next came forced-air-flow cooling and, finally, a converter on SiC devices, which has been tested jointly with JR Central on line runs. The manufacturer produces the power semiconductors for such systems itself: IGBT, hybrid and full SiC modules. The equipment is comparable to traction electrical equipment of AC electric trains and can be considered for high-speed and fast-train projects. For fast-train projects, this overview shows how the traction drive circuit changed from a diode rectifier to IGBT and SiC, and how speed grew along with it.
