Description
The system is intended for storing regenerative braking energy, operating on sections without a catenary and emergency running when the supply is lost. SCiB batteries are built from lithium-ion cells with a lithium titanate (LTO) anode. They are installed on the roof or under the carbody. They are used on hybrid trains and locomotives, metro trains and Shinkansen trains.
The basic unit has a rated capacity of 60 kWh, divided into three banks, and a rated voltage of 500 V DC. The mass is about 1,850 kg and the dimensions are 1,900 × 2,300 × 545 mm. Cooling is forced air. SCiB cells of 20 Ah are used. Cell test results give a life of 10,000 charge-discharge cycles (not a guaranteed value). The battery keeps working at low temperatures, and it is safe and durable.
The battery management system includes circuit breakers and a service disconnect between the series-connected batteries. It complies with the applicable IEC and EN standards. There are three application schemes. In a series hybrid, the diesel generator and the battery supply the traction drive and auxiliary loads, and braking energy is stored in the battery, so fuel consumption and NOx emissions fall. In a train for sections without a catenary, the battery becomes the main power source on the non-electrified section. In emergency running it takes the train to a safe place after the supply from the line is lost.
Together with JR Central, the first battery-powered autonomous running system in the world for a high-speed line was created. For the Tokyo Metro 1000 an emergency battery unit of 22 kW has been supplied.
