Description
The main task of these machines on rolling stock is to drive variable-speed fans that cool traction motors and transformers and supply air to passenger cabins. The same motors drive pumps and compressors. The motors are built in a special railway version and designed for operation from a frequency converter. They are fitted on electric locomotives, electric trains, metro cars and trams, both on new ones and during modernisation in place of unregulated auxiliary machines.
Requirements for a drive in rail transport are stricter than in general industrial applications. The drive operates without derating over a temperature range from −25 to +50 °C, starts at +70 °C and delivers full power for 10 minutes. When entering and leaving a tunnel, the motor and the electronics under the car floor tolerate temperature changes of up to 3 K/s. A drive mounted on the car body withstands 5 g shocks without damage. The motor and converter keep their parameters over the entire frequency range, and manufacture to railway standards and regular maintenance are designed for the service life of the train.
The motors operate in duty type S9, that is, from a converter, with arbitrary changes of load and speed. Degree of protection IP55, optionally IP56 or IP65 per EN 60034-5. Mounting arrangements IM B3, B35, B5, B14 and B34 per EN 60034-7, cooling IC411, IC416 or IC410 per EN 60034-6. In the standard version the coolant temperature is −20…+40 °C. To order the motor is fitted with an iID 2000 RFID transponder in which the rating plate data are stored.
In VEMoDRIVE compact drives the frequency converter is mounted directly on the motor. A separate cabinet, output filters and shielded cables are not needed, and installation is simplified. An example of the railway version, M41R 90 LY2 AST BAH, is mounted on a radial fan. For the railway version the input voltage is 3 AC 360–440 V, mains frequency 50/60 Hz ±10 %, and parameter setting and control are done from a PC through a cable with an interface converter. Variable-speed auxiliary drives are also supplied as motor-plus-converter systems. The auxiliary machines are built at plants in Germany, and sales and engineering are handled by a separate division for auxiliary and compact drives.

Questions and answers
What mechanical and climatic loads does the drive withstand?
The drive withstands 5 g shocks per DIN EN 61373 and operates from −25 to +50 °C without derating. It starts at +70 °C and delivers full power for 10 minutes.
What degree of protection and cooling do the motors have?
Basic degree of protection IP55, optionally IP56 or IP65 per EN 60034-5. Cooling IC411, IC416 or IC410 per EN 60034-6.
How does a compact drive differ from a motor with a separate converter?
In a VEMoDRIVE compact drive the frequency converter is mounted on the motor itself. A separate cabinet, output filters and shielded cables are not needed.
