Description
In traction capability FLXdrive is comparable to a diesel equivalent. It can be placed in a consist instead of one of the diesel locomotives or operated on its own, in single or multiple-unit consists. On electrified and non-electrified sections the locomotive runs with zero emissions, so it suits railways moving to low-carbon operation.
The core of the system is liquid-cooled batteries and the manufacturer's own thermal management system, tuned for energy output and service life. The battery architecture was designed specifically for rail transport. The design limits the consequences of a cell failure and its spread, and access to the service equipment is convenient, with extended LOTO lockout means. The traction components are serial, proven in service, with individual axle traction control.
The battery is charged by regenerative braking energy while the train is moving and through a stationary DC fast-charging pantograph. Charging on the move is planned, to increase range and allow operation without breaks. The modular scalable architecture is suitable for mainline, switching, regional, commuter, hybrid and special locomotives.
FLXdrive Heavy-Haul for North and South America and Australia has 6 Co-Co axles, a battery of up to 7.0 MWh, traction power of 3.2 MW, tractive effort of 890 kN and a mass of 209 t. The Switcher (Co-Co) gets 2.7 MWh, 1.7 MW, 890 kN and 189 t. The Shunter for Central Asia is built on a Bo-Bo layout with a 1.2 MWh battery, 0.7 MW power, 370 kN tractive effort and a mass of 96 t.
Dual Mode is designed for European railways with overhead catenary. It is a two-cab Co-Co locomotive with a 1.5 or 2.0 MWh battery. On battery it develops 0.8–1.5 MW, and in the catenary plus battery mode 3.8–5.5 MW, with tractive effort of 520 kN and a mass of 126 t. The 25 kV AC or 15 kV AC supply allows long routes with mixed catenary voltages to be covered.
