Description
Since 1979 the company's power electronics business has supplied power electronics and auxiliary power systems to manufacturers and train operators. The APS auxiliary power supply provides stable regulated voltage for air conditioning and ventilation, compressed air preparation units, lighting and electronics, and also charges the battery. More than 15 thousand systems are in service, and experience from their operation is taken into account in new designs.
The portfolio covers auxiliary converters, which convert 750, 1500 or 3000 V DC catenary or third rail voltage into regulated onboard voltage, and battery chargers. Classic converters have an output from 10 to 100 kVA and work as dedicated or centralized sources. The architecture is selected for the task: it can be a 3+1 phase inverter, a separate HVAC inverter or a distributed system, and all-in-one variants combine the auxiliary converter and the inverter.
The proprietary Katium topology, launched in 2004, is built as a multi-cell current source. It reduces the mass and volume of the converter and performs digital input filtering, so a small inductance replaces a heavy LC filter. The circuit suppresses interference to railway signalling track circuits, does not shut down during voltage dips caused by icing, pantograph loss or arcing, and withstands network overvoltages of any duration. A simplified topology was introduced in 2011, and the Katium SiC version in 2017.
SiC switches have lower switching losses, so the converter is cooled naturally, without a fan. Modules weighing less than 15 kg are quickly replaced, and built-in self-diagnostics points to the faulty one. The units are placed under the underframe, on the roof or inside the car.
Among the projects are the CTA3200 converter for Chicago, and converters and chargers for Regio 2N trains in France and M7 trains in Belgium, where the manufacturer supplies auxiliary converters for 355 cars with an option for 710. Katium also passed a year of demonstration operation on two R160 New York subway trains. Converter competence centers operate in France, Canada, the Czech Republic and the USA, and the new business model provides for energy saving targets agreed jointly with the customer.
