Description
EL72, EL96 and EL45 electric locomotives are built for AC, DC and dual-supply systems. Over more than 80 years the manufacturer has supplied over a thousand locomotives and sets of electrical equipment for them. In Japan this is about 600 locomotives or their electrical part, and over 2,000 went abroad. The machines are assembled at the Fuchu complex (Tokyo), and electrical equipment for locomotives is also made in Dalian (China). The first locomotive of its own production was a 73-tonne electric locomotive of 1926 for hauling coal.
The AC drive with VVVF inverters is compact and light, uses little energy and runs quietly. Vector control gives accurate and fast torque regulation. The main circuit is built on the scheme of independent control of each axle, where each motor has a PWM rectifier and a VVVF inverter. The converters are water cooled, which raises locomotive availability. Traction motors are induction of 500, 750 and 1,400 kW classes or permanent magnet synchronous with efficiency up to 97 %. The main transformer with nitrogen oil protection needs oil replacement less often. Multiple-unit train control transmits traction and regenerative braking commands to other locomotives of the train by wire or wireless channel.
Typical versions. EL72 has 7,200 kW at the wheel rim, is fed from 25 kV 50/60 Hz, runs on standard gauge, has Co-Co axle arrangement, mass 132–150 t and speed 120–160 km/h. EL96 develops 9,600 kW, and EL45 gives 4,500 kW and is designed for narrow gauge.
Deliveries include the HXD3 for China, where 1,090 freight electric locomotives of 7,200 kW, 25 kV, Co-Co, 120 km/h were built. For South Africa (customer Transnet) the Class 15E of 4,500 kW, 50 kV, mass 180 t was built, and also the dual-supply Class 19E 25 kV / 3,000 V, 3,000 kW, Bo-Bo, 100 t. For Japan Freight Railway the EH500, EH200 and EH800 were built, and individual locomotives were supplied to Turkey and India. The locomotives work in freight and passenger service and in the haulage of heavy trains. Finished machines or electrical equipment for assembly by a local manufacturer are supplied.
