Description
Auxiliary power converters (Auxiliary Power Supply, APS) feed the auxiliary circuits of rolling stock: air conditioning and heating, lighting, compressors, battery charging and control systems. The range covers four main types. High-power APS for DC cars are built on a three-level inverter. Input 1500 V DC, output three-phase 440 V 50/60 Hz, rating 120, 180, 210 or 260 kVA. The three-level circuit reduces acoustic noise and electromagnetic interference and makes it possible to obtain high power in small dimensions. High efficiency is achieved without an output filter reactor, because the power devices have low losses.
The APS for AC cars with an IGBT PWM rectifier keeps the DC link voltage stable. Input 440 V AC or 1500 V DC, output 100 V single-phase and 440 V three-phase, rating 20 and 180 kVA. The compact and light APS for small cars has medium-frequency galvanic isolation with forced air cooling, so the mass and size of the reactors and the transformer are reduced roughly tenfold. Input 750 V DC, output 440 V three-phase and 100 V DC, rating 70, 110 and 140 kVA.
High-reliability APS are equipped with a standby power unit. If the main unit fails, the system automatically switches to the standby one and continues to supply the load. For this version the input is 1500 V DC, the output is 440 V AC and the rating is 120–260 kVA. Examples of designs include a 750 V DC / 380 V AC inverter rated 130 kVA, a converter for 20/25 kV AC cars with a 440 V output rated 180 kVA, and generators for diesel trains and passenger coaches rated up to 440 kVA. A small number of components and simple control reduce the risk of failures, and practically no maintenance is needed.
These APS are in operation in cold regions, including the Kyiv metro (Ukraine) and Hokkaido Railway, in the tropics, including Singapore MRT, and also in the Washington metro, on JR East, in South Africa, in New South Wales (roof-mounted version), on Manila LRT-1 and on Chongqing Metro. The product is an equivalent of static auxiliary converters for electric trains and metro cars.

Questions and answers
What are the rating and voltage of APS for DC cars?
Input 1500 V DC, output three-phase 440 V 50/60 Hz. Rating 120, 180, 210 or 260 kVA, with a three-level inverter circuit.
How does the compact APS for small cars differ?
It has medium-frequency galvanic isolation with forced air cooling, so the reactors and the transformer are roughly tenfold smaller in mass and size. Input 750 V DC, rating 70, 110 and 140 kVA.
What happens if a power unit fails?
In the version with a standby power unit, the system automatically switches to the standby unit and continues to supply the load. The rating of this version is 120–260 kVA with a 1500 V DC input.
