Description
Traxx Universal is a four-axle platform of mainline electric locomotives (Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement) for freight and passenger service on domestic and international corridors. In the manufacturer's assessment, it is the newest four-axle locomotive platform, with the latest converters, transformer, signalling and communication systems and easy upgrading to future requirements. The locomotives haul freight and passenger trains at up to 200 km/h. They are produced in many configurations for different overhead line voltages (multi-system MS, AC only or DC only), signalling systems and traction requirements, for one or several countries, with multiple-unit operation and in push-pull formations.
The new Traxx generation is optimised for tractive effort, power, energy consumption and maintainability. It can haul more wagons, save energy and visit the depot less often, with a service interval of not less than 40 000 km. The manufacturer was the first to offer the last mile function. It opens access to non-electrified terminals, ports and sidings with high tractive effort and a smooth transition without a shunting locomotive, and with remote control during shunting one person can do the work. The secondary source is a diesel or a battery.
Gauge is 1435 mm, axle load about 22 t, power up to 6.4 MW, tractive effort up to 340 kN and speed 160–200 km/h. More than 500 locomotives have been ordered, more than 100 of them with the last mile function. The Traxx platform counts more than 5700 locomotives in 25+ countries. Combining the platform with the manufacturer's onboard signalling opens new long corridors, for example East–West from France to Poland.
Projects include Traxx 3 MS for ČD Cargo (48 units), Traxx 3 AC with Last Mile for Railpool (Sweden/Norway), Traxx 3 DC for GTS Rail and Mercitalia (Italy) and Traxx 3 MS for CFL Cargo. Railpool ordered 20 Traxx 3 AC locomotives, all with the last mile function. GTS Rail signed an agreement for 20 locomotives, the Mercitalia contract for 40 plus 20 locomotives includes 16 years of full maintenance, and CFL Cargo ordered 10 Traxx 3 MS locomotives. In the same class, Traxx locomotives haul heavier trains in many applications, while commonality of units and the service network reduce operating costs.
