Traxx Shunter — shunting electric locomotive with a diesel or battery module, over 2 MW, 120 km/h
Traxx Shunter is a modular platform of shunting and trip locomotives with a peak power of over 2 MW and a speed of up to 120 km/h. Main traction is electric from an AC overhead line, and the secondary source is a battery or diesel. The locomotive works in shunting, track works, terminals, ports and on short mainline legs.

Description
The locomotives move trains in marshalling yards, carry out light and heavy track works, work in short mainline service, in rescue operations and in ports. The platform combines flexibility of versions with commonality of units, so spare parts, personnel training and maintenance are the same across variants. The locomotives are equipped for different energy sources and overhead line voltages and are produced in different weight variants, for hauling heavy trains or for branch lines with an axle load limit.
A peak power of over 2 MW allows safe running at up to 120 km/h, while most conventional shunting locomotives run at 80 km/h. That is why Traxx Shunter fits easily into mainline traffic. Tractive effort of up to 300 kN and advanced adhesion control allow it to take more wagons and accelerate in curves and on gradients. One locomotive covers both shunting work and short mainline runs.
From the overhead line the locomotive works as an electric locomotive, and on non-electrified tracks it switches to battery or diesel. The diesel can run on HVO and e-fuels, and the battery version gives zero direct emissions. Switching between modes occurs without loss of tractive effort. Pollutant emissions fall by up to 70 % and fuel consumption by up to 60 %, and energy consumption, noise, NOx and CO2 emissions are lower as well.
A central cab with good visibility, cameras and platforms at both ends is convenient for shunting. The locomotive is compatible with the modular ETCS system Onvia Cab and with a set of national train protection systems. It is prepared for digital condition-based and predictive maintenance with HealthHub, and customer support around the clock is provided by a central service centre.
Basic parameters are 1435 mm gauge, an axle load of 21 t and main AC traction. Northrail has signed a framework agreement for up to 100 electro-diesel locomotives for Germany and France. The whole Traxx platform counts more than 5700 locomotives in 25+ countries, and in the same class these locomotives haul heavier trains in many applications, while commonality of units and the service network reduce operating costs.

Questions and answers
What speed and tractive effort does Traxx Shunter have?
The locomotive with a peak power of over 2 MW runs at up to 120 km/h. Starting tractive effort is 300 kN.
Can the locomotive work on non-electrified tracks?
Yes, the secondary energy source is a battery or diesel, including on HVO or e-fuels. Switching between modes occurs without loss of tractive effort.
What gauge and axle load is Traxx Shunter produced for?
The basic version is designed for 1435 mm gauge and an axle load of 21 t. Different weight variants exist, including for branch lines with an axle load limit.
