Traxx Passenger / Prima M4 — passenger electric locomotives up to 6.4 MW for 1435 and 1520 mm gauge (TSI, GOST)

Traxx Passenger is a portfolio of passenger electric locomotives rated up to 6.4 MW for 1435 and 1520 mm gauge. The locomotives haul coach trains in international service, in push-pull formation and on sections without an overhead line. Versions exist to TSI for Europe, for North America and to GOST for 1520 mm gauge.

Description

The locomotives meet a wide range of interoperability requirements, from operation in several countries to different railway regulations and difficult natural conditions. The manufacturer's passenger locomotives have worked for 20 years on three continents and have proven their performance in harsh climates. Passengers do not need to change trains at a border, when the power supply or signalling system changes, or where electrification ends. Low noise and low particle emissions raise travel comfort.

The locomotives are built for 1435 or 1520 mm gauge with an axle load of 21–32 t. Main traction is electric, multi-system, AC or DC, and the secondary source is diesel. Power reaches 6.4 MW, tractive effort 264–317 kN and speed 160–201 km/h. The diesel module as a secondary source allows a non-electrified section to be passed without changing the locomotive. More than 1000 locomotives have been sold, and individual versions are adapted to the requirements of specific regions.

Two Prima M4 projects are typical for 1520 mm networks. For Kazakhstan Railways, 95 KZ4AT passenger electric locomotives are being supplied. Azerbaijan Railways received 10 multi-system AZ4A locomotives, which run on 25 kV AC in the East–West corridor and on 3 kV DC in the North–South corridor. Their overhaul intervals have been extended and energy consumption reduced. For networks combining 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC, as in Ukraine, this version is the closest in supply scheme.

In North America, dual-mode electro-diesel ALP-45DP locomotives work for NJ Transit and EXO in the USA and Canada. They combine overhead line supply with diesel traction, so one locomotive serves a route with electrified and non-electrified sections. For SNCB, 24 Traxx 3 locomotives have been ordered with an option for up to 50, for 200 km/h trains between Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany.

The whole Traxx platform counts more than 5700 locomotives in 25+ countries. In the same class, Traxx locomotives haul heavier trains in many applications, while commonality of units and the service network reduce operating costs. To select a version, the track gauge, the power supply systems on the route, the required speed, the axle load and the train protection system are needed.

Questions and answers

Are there versions for 1520 mm gauge?

Yes, there is a version to GOST standards for 1520 mm gauge. Among others, 95 Prima M4 KZ4AT locomotives work on this gauge in Kazakhstan and 10 AZ4A locomotives in Azerbaijan.

Which power supply systems do the locomotives support?

The locomotives are multi-system, AC or DC, with diesel as a secondary source. AZ4A locomotives run on 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC.

What power and speed do Traxx Passenger electric locomotives have?

Power reaches 6.4 MW, tractive effort 264–317 kN and speed 160–201 km/h. The axle load is 21–32 t depending on the version.
