Traction Drive — traction drive (motor + gearbox) for trams, metro, electric trains and locomotives
Traction Drive is a complete traction drive in which the motor and the gearbox are designed, built and tested by a single supplier. The manufacturer takes on all mechanical interfaces between the drive, the bogie and the car body. The drives run on trams, metro cars, electric and diesel multiple units, high-speed trains and locomotives.
- Composition
- traction motor (TMF/TME/TMR/TMW) + gearbox (GKD/GMK/GFT/GFH/GMH)
- Arrangements
- frame-mounted, semi-suspended, partially suspended, axle-hung; drives for 100 % low-floor cars
- Examples
- TME 45-19-4 + GKD 1-74-332A (Vienna metro); TMW 28-23-4 + GMK 2-101-383A (Glasgow metro); TMF 64A-44-6 + GFT 1-48-446A (EUROMulti locomotive)
- Motor power in the drives
- 68–431 kW (per reference lists)

Description
The manufacturer designs the motor and the gearbox as a single unit. It defines the drive concept and the parameters of both assemblies and draws up a verification plan that runs from finite element calculations to type and routine tests of the complete drive. The design office, production and test field work side by side. The company has been building gearboxes for more than 25 years.
The portfolio covers all parallel arrangements: frame-mounted (fully sprung), semi-suspended, partially suspended and axle-hung drives. For 100 % low-floor trams the manufacturer builds special transverse and longitudinal drives for an axle or for a wheel. The gearbox is a helical cylindrical design of the manufacturer's own. The TMF, TME, TMR and TMW motor series have class 220 insulation and are electromagnetically designed for converter supply. The motor and gearbox are designed to common rules, with common catalogue parts and consumables, matched maintenance intervals, a single set of documentation and joint personnel training. This reduces the range of spare parts and simplifies operation.
The reference lists give specific pairs. The Siemens Type X metro for Vienna received a TME 45-19-4 motor rated 180 kW and a GKD 1-74-332A gearbox. The Stadler metro in Glasgow runs TMW 28-23-4 liquid-cooled 68 kW motors with GMK 2-101-383A gearboxes, and the high-speed Train 18 in India has TME 49-30-4 and GKD 1-52-372A. The Stadler EUROMulti locomotive for VR is fitted with a TMF 64A-44-6 (431 kW, 10 136 N·m) and a GFT 1-48-446A. The Tramlink trams in Lugano and Gmunden have TMW 32-22-4 motors with GFH 6-78-534B and 6-90-534A gearboxes, and the Stadler GTW diesel multiple units have TMF 50-29-4 with GMK 2-55-495B. The manufacturer's drives also run on EG2Tv electric trains, PESA Elf/Elf2, Newag 36WE and Stadler/Metrovagonmash DPM diesel trains.
The drive is fitted to trams and tram-trains, metro, monorails, electric and diesel multiple units, high-speed and hybrid trains, and locomotives. It works in any climate, from deserts to the Arctic. The UKT ZED customs code is given for the motor with the gearbox as a single drive; the gearbox on its own is classified under 8607. For each project the manufacturer acts as the single point of contact for the motor and the gearbox, from tender to delivery and after-sales service. Previously the company worked with almost all European gearbox makers and knows the challenges of integrating assemblies from two different suppliers.

Questions and answers
Which suspension arrangements does Traction Drive cover?
Frame-mounted, semi-suspended, partially suspended and axle-hung. For 100 % low-floor trams there are transverse and longitudinal drives for an axle or for a wheel.
What power do the motors in the drives have?
According to the reference lists, from 68 kW (TMW 28-23-4, Glasgow metro) to 431 kW (TMF 64A-44-6, Stadler EUROMulti locomotive).
How is the drive verified before series delivery?
The design is calculated by the finite element method, then type and routine tests are carried out on the complete drive, that is, on the motor together with the gearbox.
