TMF — forced-ventilated traction induction motor 120–1536 kW

TMF is the main series of forced-ventilated traction induction motors from the manufacturer, rated 120–1536 kW. The motors are installed on electric locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives, high-speed trains, electric and diesel multiple units, and rack (mountain) locomotives. Each version is designed for the bogie and traction drive of a specific customer.

Description

The TMF series has no fixed model catalog. The manufacturer runs it as a frame-size platform and calculates the motor for each project to the customer's bogie, traction drive and converter. In the designation TMF 64A-53-6 the first number indicates the frame size, the second the core length, and the third the number of poles, which is 4 or 6. This platform also includes the TMEF versions for rack railways rated 130–330 kW.

The motor is three-phase with a squirrel-cage rotor, the cage assembled from copper bars and rings. Copper lowers the rotor temperature and raises efficiency. The electromagnetic design is calculated for supply from a traction converter, and the windings are made in the TSADUR insulation system of class 220 (R). Against inverter-induced bearing currents, insulated bearings, grounding brushes or both together are fitted. The construction is low-vibration and shock-resistant. Cooling is forced: outside air is supplied by a separate fan, and this scheme suits any frame size. For individual projects the manufacturer makes self-ventilated variants.

According to the manufacturer's reference lists, TMF versions have winding voltage from 185 to 2807 V, maximum speed up to 7183 rpm, weight from 380 to 2155 kg and starting torque up to 11 955 N·m. The upper power limit is held by the TMF 69-42-6 for Stadler EURO6000 and EURO9000 locomotives, rated 1536 kW at 2720 V. The TMF 64A-53-6 of 1190 kW is fitted on Indian Railways WAG9H and WAP7 locomotives, and the TMF 69-42-4 of 1300 kW runs on Talgo ECx trains for Deutsche Bahn. For the intercity electric trains of KVBZ built for Ukrzaliznytsia, the manufacturer supplies the TMF 59-39-4 rated 501 kW and 2340 V.

TMF motors work on freight and passenger locomotives, on the high-speed trains CAF Oaris, Talgo 250 and Stadler Giruno, on the multiple units FLIRT, KISS and PESA Elf, on GTW diesel trains, and on track machines of Plasser & Theurer and Loram. Another field is the modernization of diesel locomotives with a change from direct to alternating current (DC→AC), as on the Norfolk Southern Dash9. According to the manufacturer, its traction motors operate in any climate, from the polar circle to the equator. The motors meet the requirements of the IEC 60349 series, and the manufacturer has certification experience with RDSO, ГОСТ, RGS (Great Britain) and DB Quality Check. Production is located in Wiener Neudorf in Austria.
