TGE — asynchronous traction generator 370–1086 kW
TGE is a series of asynchronous traction generators rated 370–1086 kW for diesel multiple units, hybrid multiple units (HMU/DMU), diesel-electric locomotives, track maintenance and rescue vehicles. The generator converts the mechanical energy of the diesel engine into electricity for the traction motors. It is also installed in PowerPack modules for underfloor and roof mounting.

Description
TGE converts the energy of the diesel engine shaft into current for the train's traction motors. The generator works together with the diesel engine, while excitation and power output are controlled by the traction converter. The rotor is a squirrel-cage type, with a cage of copper bars and rings; there are no permanent magnets or slip rings. If the rotor is turned with the terminals open, there is no voltage at the terminals, because the magnetic field is created only by the converter. This is safer during maintenance, and the manufacturer does not depend on rare-earth magnets.
The winding insulation is class 220. The design is vibration-resistant and intended for mounting directly on the diesel engine. Cooling is by air, either self-ventilated or forced, in an open design. The manufacturer stresses the low mass of its generators at high power density, and for hybrid trains vibration resistance comes first. Each generator is designed for the characteristic of a specific diesel engine, the layout and the train's operating modes. Requirements are taken from the IEC 60349 series. The manufacturer has been improving its traction generators for decades, and they operate in any environmental conditions. One reason, according to the manufacturer, is its own insulation system.
According to the reference lists, TGE generators are rated 370–950 kW, and the TGSE 71-59-6 delivers 1086 kW. Voltage ranges from 480 to 2240 V, rotational speed is up to 2520 rpm and mass is 980–3275 kg. A 500–550 kW TGE 59-33-4 is fitted to Stadler FLIRT and GTW diesel trains. A 736 kW TGE 59A-43-4 is part of the MTU PowerPack for Trenitalia's Hitachi Masaccio trains and for the Končar diagnostic car. The TGE 64-44-4 (880 kW) runs on Stadler/Metrovagonmash DPM diesel trains, the TGE 69-42-6 (950 kW, 2240 V) on the Stadler EURO9000 platform, and the TGE 64-28-6 (472 kW) on the Toshiba HDB 800 locomotive for DB Cargo. The TGSE 71-59-6 is supplied for Indian Railways DEMU.
TGE is also fitted to dual-system and multi-engine locomotives, Plasser & Theurer track machines, rescue trains for the Gotthard tunnel and Hitachi IEP high-speed trains. Every generator undergoes type and routine tests at the manufacturer's own test station in Wiener Neudorf. The Long-Life Value Service is available for the whole service life, with an exchange pool, repair and modernisation.

Questions and answers
What power do TGE generators have?
According to the reference lists, TGE generators are rated 370–950 kW, and the TGSE 71-59-6 version delivers 1086 kW. The voltage of the versions is 480–2240 V.
Does the TGE generator contain permanent magnets?
No. The rotor is a squirrel-cage type with a copper cage, without magnets or slip rings, and the excitation is created by the converter, so with the terminals open there is no voltage at the terminals.
Which trains already use TGE generators?
The 500–550 kW TGE 59-33-4 is fitted to Stadler FLIRT and GTW diesel trains, and the 880 kW TGE 64-44-4 to DPM diesel trains. The 950 kW TGE 69-42-6 runs on the Stadler EURO9000 platform.
