Description
Traction gearboxes are part of the Mitrac Drive portfolio together with traction motors rated 50–1600 kW and traction generators of 300–800 kW for regional trains and locomotives. The gearbox portfolio covers fully sprung (frame-mounted), partly suspended and unsprung (axle-hung) versions. This makes it possible to select the drive scheme for the speed, axle load and bogie design, from trams and metros to regional and high-speed trains and locomotives.
The gearboxes are designed together with Mitrac Drive motors. The asynchronous range includes highly compact motors with an optimised interface to the gearbox, windings of formed or randomly laid wire, and different cooling options: self-ventilation, forced ventilation and water cooling. There are also motors tuned for energy saving and noise reduction. Permanent magnet synchronous motors are lighter and more compact than asynchronous ones and have a higher power density, and in the closed version they are less affected by contamination and weather, so they need less maintenance. According to the manufacturer, energy savings at train level with such motors reach 15%. More than 200,000 motors are in service, of which more than 9000 are permanent magnet motors.
With Flexx bogies, Mitrac Drive drives are produced in different topologies for different gauges and axle loads. The approach in which one manufacturer supplies the motor, gearbox and bogie simplifies integration into the traction chain and maintenance. Mitrac Drive gearboxes and motors are also available for rolling stock of other manufacturers. The gearbox and motor are treated as a single traction drive unit of the bogie, which determines the choice of suspension scheme. The motors are made closed or open, with options for winter and tropical conditions. Life-cycle service covers maintenance, repair and spare parts.
The portfolio is developed at competence centres in Ornans (France), Västerås (Sweden) and Vienna (Austria), and local supply is handled by sites in China, the USA, India and South Africa. Technical parameters of the gearboxes (gear ratios, torques, weights) are not published on the manufacturer's page and are clarified on request for the specific rolling stock.
