GKD / GMK / GFT / GFH / GMH — traction gearboxes for rail vehicles
GKD, GMK, GFT, GFH and GMH are helical cylindrical traction gearboxes for trams, metro, electric trains, high-speed trains and locomotives. The gearboxes come with one, two or three stages, for installation together with a motor from the same manufacturer or as stand-alone units. The manufacturer has produced them for more than 25 years and has built more than 5800 units.

Description
The gearboxes are distinguished by the degree of drive suspension. In frame-mounted GIH, GMH and GSH drives, the motor and gearbox are fully sprung, the unsprung mass is minimal, there is no speed limit, and the torque is transmitted to the axle by a cardan coupling with two joints. In semi-suspended GIK, GMK and GSK drives, about 50 % of the drive mass rests on the wheelset. No cross-beam is needed here, and speed is limited to 160 km/h. In partially suspended GKD and GHD drives, the motor is fixed to the frame, while the gearbox rests on the axle through two bearings and a torque reaction rod. Such a drive has a low life-cycle cost and also works without a speed limit. Separately, the manufacturer builds axle-hung drives.
For 100 % low-floor cars, transverse and longitudinal arrangements with a drive to an axle or to an individual wheel are provided. The GFH series is intended for such trams. The gearbox is installed together with the manufacturer's motor or as a stand-alone unit, and the number of stages ranges from one to three.
The reference lists show where the gearboxes operate. The GKD 1-52-372A is fitted to the Train 18 high-speed electric train in India, the GKD 1-74-332A to the Siemens Type X metro in Vienna, and the GKD 1-61-346A to the Kolkata metro. The GMK 2-101-383A is installed on the Stadler metro in Glasgow, the GMK 2-55-495B on Stadler GTW diesel trains for eBART and FGC, the GMK 2-66-495E on EG2Tv electric trains, and the GMK 2-60/50-495 on PESA Elf and Elf2. The Stadler EUROMulti locomotive for Finnish VR has a GFT 1-48-446A, and the Tramlink trams in Lugano and Gmunden run with GFH 6-78-534B and 6-90-534A. The frame-mounted GMH 2-43-595A runs on electric trains at 200 km/h, that is, where the semi-suspended arrangement with its 160 km/h limit is no longer suitable.
Gearboxes and motors are designed to common rules. They share catalogue parts and consumables, matched maintenance intervals and a single set of documentation. Calculations are made by the finite element method, and the design is verified by type and routine tests of the drive. For each project the manufacturer remains the single point of contact for the gearbox and the motor, from tender to delivery and after-sales service. Previously the company worked with almost all European gearbox makers and knows the challenges of integrating assemblies from different suppliers.

Questions and answers
What suspension types do the gearboxes have?
Frame-mounted (GIH, GMH, GSH), semi-suspended (GIK, GMK, GSK), partially suspended (GKD, GHD) and axle-hung. For 100 % low-floor trams there are transverse and longitudinal arrangements of the GFH series.
What is the maximum speed for the semi-suspended GMK drive?
Semi-suspended GMK gearboxes are limited to 160 km/h. Frame-mounted and partially suspended drives have no such limit.
Can the gearbox be ordered separately from the motor?
Yes, the gearboxes are produced both for installation with a motor from the same manufacturer and for stand-alone installation. One-, two- and three-stage versions are selected for the specific drive.
