Traction electrical equipment and motors for trolleybuses and electric buses, 100–300 kW

The company makes traction motors for trolleybuses rated from 100 to 300 kW and traction drives for 600–750 V DC networks. The equipment is fitted to its own T'CITY trolleybuses and to bodies from other builders, for example Solaris. A separate line is trolleybuses with traction batteries for running without an overhead line.

Description

Trolleybuses have been built in Plzeň for many years, with more than 15,000 vehicles produced in total, and the company makes the traction electrical equipment for them itself. The design is modular, so individual units are selected for the trolleybus type and the customer's requirements. The traction motors are asynchronous and can be fitted with a speed sensor and platinum temperature sensors. During braking the motors switch to regenerative mode. The DIS Show diagnostic system continuously monitors the operation of all the electrical equipment and displays faults.

A typical example is the electrical equipment of the 24 m 38Tr trolleybus. It combines SiC and IGBT technology with two low-maintenance asynchronous motors. The rated power is 2 × 160 kVA for the traction inverter, 50 kW for the auxiliary converter and 16 kW for the onboard battery charger. The rated network voltage is 600 or 750 V DC, and the equipment works with either polarity of the contact wire and at reduced network voltage. Braking energy recovery is protected against short circuits and saves up to 30 % of energy. Double insulation is used inside the container, and the electrical equipment has a degree of protection of IP55. The traction battery gives a guaranteed range of 11 km without an overhead line.

On the 30Tr trolleybus the drive power is 160 kW, and all the electrical equipment is assembled in a container on the roof. The sets work in trolleybuses 12, 18 and 24 m long, in vehicles with traction batteries or an auxiliary diesel generator, and in E'CITY electric buses that recharge from a 600/750 V overhead line. Trolleybuses with batteries, so-called partial trolleybuses, serve routes where the overhead line covers only part of the route. For an operator this is a way to put a trolleybus on a street where wires have not yet been strung, without building the network to the end of the route.

The traction circuit is tested in the company's own test center together with the converter, motor and gearbox, and electromagnetic and thermal calculations are performed at the design stage. On average the company directs 10 % of annual turnover to new products, and more than 200 specialists work in its technical departments. The equipment is supplied for new vehicles and for the modernization of trolleybuses already in service.
