Description
The company makes traction motors and drives for locomotives, electric and diesel multiple units, metro cars, trams and mining transport. Its portfolio includes asynchronous and synchronous (iPMSM) motors of all power classes, and this item covers the asynchronous machines for mainline rolling stock and metro. The motor works in a pair with the company's traction converter, and during braking it switches to regenerative mode and returns energy to the network. The company presented its first traction IGBT converter in 1995 and showed its first converter on SiC MOSFET in 2015. A squirrel-cage rotor has no commutator or brushes, and such a motor is simpler to maintain than a DC machine.
The compact design is optimized for power, strength, and mechanical, electrical and thermal properties by methods of mathematical analysis and synthesis. The results of modeling and prototype tests are checked in the company's own test center, then on a test ring when the running characteristics of cars are verified, and in service. The center tests the motor together with the traction transformer, converter and gearbox, that is, the whole traction circuit. Quality and service life are confirmed by tests of all components in production. The design is agreed with the requirements of a particular car, and the manufacturer does not publish individual data sheets for the motors. The company continues to develop three-phase AC traction technology, renewing both the power components and the converter control algorithms. The converter modules are easily accessible for maintenance, and their lower mass makes the rolling stock design lighter.
The double-deck electric multiple units 471 CityElefant have four asynchronous traction motors of 500 kW each with an electrodynamic regenerative brake. The three-system electric locomotives 380/381 are equipped with four three-phase asynchronous motors supplied by traction converters. During the modernization of the dual-system electric locomotive 363.5 the power of the traction motors was raised to 925 kW. The company's motors also work in electric trains of the series 575, 671 and 675 for Ukrzaliznytsia, in Emil Zátopek electric locomotives and in metro cars.
The company formulates its requirements for a motor as follows: safe operation, economy, low energy consumption, robustness, low life cycle cost and minimal environmental impact. On average it directs 10 % of annual turnover to the development of new products, and more than 200 specialists work in its technical departments. The motors are supplied both for new cars and for the modernization of the fleet already in service.

Questions and answers
What power do the asynchronous traction motors have?
The power is defined for the project. The 471 CityElefant electric train has four motors of 500 kW each, and on the modernized 363.5 electric locomotive the power of the traction motors is 925 kW.
What converters supply the motors?
The company's traction converters with IGBT or SiC elements, with regenerative braking.
How are the traction motors tested?
In the company's own test center together with the traction transformer, converter and gearbox, then on a test ring. All components are also tested during production.
