Description
Mitrac Drive covers traction motors for any rail rolling stock, from 50 to 1600 kW. They are fitted to locomotives, tram-trains and light rail, monorails, automated metros, regional and high-speed trains. The motors are also supplied for rolling stock of other manufacturers, with guaranteed integration into the bogie and the traction chain. The drives deliver high performance and save energy and life-cycle costs. Gearboxes are a separate part of the portfolio.
The asynchronous range consists of several architectures. There are highly compact motors with an optimised interface to the gearbox, with form-wound or random-wound windings. Cooling comes in three types, namely self-ventilation, forced ventilation and water cooling. Some machines are tuned for energy saving and noise reduction. The specific architecture is chosen according to the bogie, operating conditions and integration requirements.
The manufacturer is recognised as a pioneer of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMM). Compared with asynchronous motors they are lighter and more compact and have a higher power-to-weight ratio, so the rolling stock shows better performance at lower operating costs. These are closed machines, so contamination, dirt and weather do not harm them, and maintenance is needed less often. At train level PMM give energy savings of up to 15%.
The motors come open and closed, with versions for cold climates (winterisation) and for the tropics. More than 200,000 motors are in service, of which more than 9000 are permanent magnet motors. They are developed at competence centres in Ornans (France), Västerås (Sweden) and Vienna (Austria), and production sites in China, the USA, India and South Africa allow local supply.
The motors can be ordered together with Mitrac Drive gearboxes (fully sprung, partly sprung and unsprung) and Flexx bogies. The whole mechanical part of the traction chain then comes from one manufacturer. Service is available for the entire service life. Alongside in the portfolio are traction generators of 300–800 kW for regional trains and locomotives, and the motors are combined with them in a single traction scheme.
