Description

Shearer motors are specialised flameproof machines for the cutting heads, haulage drives, lumpbreakers and hydraulic pumps of longwall shearers. The cutting head cuts the coal, the haulage drive moves the shearer along the face, the lumpbreaker breaks up large pieces, and the hydraulic pump supplies the machine hydraulics. The shearer drive operates in a confined space, so power density per unit volume is as important here as resistance to failure.

According to the manufacturer, the motors are designed for maximum reliability and provide the highest power density per unit volume. They are made to the customer's specific connection dimensions, and the characteristics are calculated for the application. If required, a quick-release drive shaft is provided, which simplifies motor replacement underground.

Cutting motors (Shearer Cutter) are rated 100–1100 kW, 1000–4160 V, 4–8 poles. The design is horizontal flange-mounted, with class H insulation, a flameproof enclosure and a water-cooled jacket. Haulage motors (Shearer Haulage) are rated 40–250 kW, 315–3300 V and 2–4 poles, also flange-mounted and water-cooled.

For hard-to-reach drives, for example cutting motors, bearings are used that need no regreasing over their service life. This reduces maintenance in the face and cuts the number of interventions on drives that are difficult to access. This matters in a coal longwall, where every shearer stoppage costs output.

All motors are designed for an ambient temperature of 30 °C, are built to IEC and certified to ATEX, IECEx, TSA, MSHA, CSA, MA and TR CU. The motor type and voltage are selected according to the shearer power supply scheme and the drive location, so the specific selection is agreed with the manager. Cutting motors work in the hardest duty, because the cutting head meets varying seam hardness, and starting torques and overloads are typical for it. Haulage motors move the shearer along the face. All machines are supplied in flameproof design for underground work in mines hazardous due to gas or dust.
