Description
The British manufacturer of motors for underground coal mining has been operating since 1897. Production is now concentrated in Norwich. The AFC motors are intended to drive armoured face conveyors (Armoured Face Conveyor) of longwall faces, as well as beam stage loaders and crushers. According to the manufacturer, such motors are used by all the major mining equipment makers, and they run on the most productive longwalls in the world.
Technical data: power 300–1600 kW, rated voltage 1100–11,000 V, 4–8 poles, horizontal flange-mounted design, class H insulation, flameproof construction, air or water cooling. The design ambient temperature is 30 °C. Duty types vary. The horizontal flange-mounted design simplifies the connection to the conveyor drive gearbox. According to the manufacturer's brochure, the power of conveyor drive motors reaches 2000 kW.
The motors are built to IEC standards and certified to ATEX and IECEx, as well as to national mining systems, namely TSA (Australia), MSHA (USA), CSA (Canada), MA (China) and TR CU. The manufacturer was the first to develop 11 kV conveyor motors in flameproof design for underground work.
All mining motors are made to order for a specific machine. Frames and end shields are welded steel. The rotor of the company's own design has copper or copper-alloy bars secured by spring pins, and since its introduction in 1980 there have been no failures of this component. High-voltage windings are made of diamond-shaped coils with epoxy-glass-mica insulation, with class H solvent-free resin VPI impregnation.
The rated powers are calculated for a temperature rise of 90 K with inlet water up to 30 °C (water cooling) or 80 K with air up to 40 °C. The motors are compatible with operation from a frequency converter, have insulated bearings and are designed for frequent starts with the high moment of inertia of the conveyor. The item is close in purpose and voltage to the flameproof face conveyor motors for 1140 V and 3.3 kV used in Ukrainian mines. The motors are built to a project, so connection dimensions and the cooling scheme are agreed before ordering.
