Description

The motors are intended for ferries, cruise liners, megayachts, tugs, research vessels, wind farm support vessels and offshore platforms. The machines are built at the plant in Dresden, the programme covers three main areas, and the motor type is selected to suit the layout of the propulsion plant.

Horizontal low-speed motors for direct drive of the propeller shaft are designed for supply from low- or medium-voltage converters and are built with ratings up to 30,000 kW. Operation from a converter with one or several winding systems, starting through a soft starter and a combined scheme of direct starting plus a variable-speed drive (tandem) are possible. Vertical motors for azimuth L-drives rated up to 16,000 kW combine the compactness of underwater drives with the characteristics of standard machines. An upper gearbox is not needed, efficiency rises, shipyard installation costs fall, and the drive can be tested on a test bed before installation.

Motors for waterjets and for operation through a gearbox, including in PTI/PTO systems, are built with ratings up to 5000 kW with rolling or sleeve bearings. They are also suitable for vessel conversions, raising overall efficiency and reducing running hours of the main engines. Thruster motors, whether azimuth, tunnel or retractable, are built with ratings up to 5000 kW for operation from a frequency converter or direct on-line starting from the grid in duty types S1 or S2.

All PM machines are suitable for operation from a frequency converter. A formed winding withstands the harshest conditions per IVIC D, while a random-wound winding requires a dU/dt filter that reduces harmonics and the effect on rotor temperature. PM machines withstand short circuits in the main switchboard or in the converter without demagnetising the rotor.

Depending on the task, permanent magnet synchronous motors, separately excited synchronous motors and induction motors are used. According to the catalogue, PM motors for electric propulsion cover the range 120 kW – 9 MW, have built-in magnets resistant to short-circuit currents, and efficiency 2–4 % higher at full load, while at part load the gain reaches 10 %. The products are certified by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, CCS, PRS, Korean Register and ClassNK. Deliveries include propulsion motors up to 10 MW for megayachts and propulsion plants up to 30 MW.
