Description
Permanent magnet machines are intended for high value-added applications, primarily naval ones, and for auxiliary tasks such as small pilot generators that supply voltage regulators. The manufacturer has 30 years of experience with rare-earth magnets and takes on commitments for the durability and reliability of such equipment.
The main line is electric propulsion motors. Permanent magnet motors gain in volume and performance and offer acoustic stealth, so they are chosen above all for naval programs: drives for FREMM frigates and submarines. In a synchronous machine the magnets provide excitation without a separate supply to the rotor winding, which simplifies maintenance. These are the qualities that matter for naval programs: a smaller machine volume, a low acoustic signature and a minimum of scheduled maintenance. The durability of the magnets, on which the manufacturer gives a commitment, is also important for such programs. Beyond propulsion motors, the same technologies are used in small auxiliary machines, including pilot generators for voltage regulators.
In 1999 the manufacturer delivered the first Magtronic permanent magnet propulsion motor, for the Scorpène-type O'Higgins-class submarines of the Chilean Navy. This was a decisive step in compactness, acoustic stealth and reduced maintenance. The company takes part in French naval sovereignty programs, including the construction of third-generation nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SNLE 3G) and the future new-generation aircraft carrier (PA-NG). At the main site a test complex with three machines has been built, which supply the submarine propulsion motors during testing.
For multiphase permanent magnet synchronous machines, specialized marine frequency drives rated 1–10 MW are made. The manufacturer also carries out research into superconducting machines; in the Ecoswing consortium it became a co-developer of the first 3.6 MW superconducting wind generator. The production base consists of four specialized plants in France (the main site, Champagne-sur-Seine, Carquefou, Étupes) and a plant in India (Vadodara). The main site has a 5.4 m impregnation tank, 55 overhead cranes, four test platforms and four balancing benches.
