Description
The company has developed and built traction electric motors for more than 100 years. The three-phase induction machines are installed on electric locomotives and diesel locomotives with electric transmission, electric multiple units, trams, metro, track and special machines, as well as on trolleybuses, hybrid buses and electric buses. The motors are compact, have high efficiency and run quietly, which lowers energy consumption and operating costs and raises passenger comfort. The range includes three-phase induction motors for locomotives with forced ventilation, self-ventilated metro motors and motors for buses with forced ventilation, as well as compact VEMoDRIVE drives for railway use.
The stator winding is two-layer, made of formed coils with class 200 insulation (VPI-200 system). Three cooling schemes are used, namely water jacket, forced ventilation and self-ventilation with surface cooling. Versions are single- and double-bearing, with longitudinal (twin motor, axle or wheel drive) and transverse (axle drive) installation.
DKCBZ are air surface-cooled motors only 270 mm high, rated 50–125 kW, for low-floor trams; they can be installed longitudinally and transversely and suit all common track gauges. DKWBZ are water-jacket motors produced since 1994, from small machines for a single wheel drive to powerful locomotive motors for extreme climates. DKOBZ rated 120–155 kW with shaft heights of 370 and 430 mm are intended for large high-speed trams and metro and run, for example, on the Docklands Light Railway in London.
DKABZ rated 42–85 kW with transverse ventilation are used to modernise old trams: a three-phase stator is fitted into the retained housing of a DC motor without redesigning the bogie. For suburban and regional electric trains at speeds up to 160 km/h there are 280–650 kW motors with forced ventilation (ÖBB 4023/4024 Talent electric trains, PESA). Their insulation allows direct 3 kV DC supply, and speed sensors, temperature sensors and insulated bearings are provided. The traction machines are built at the plant in Dresden, which is certified for welding of railway vehicles under EN 15085-2. The motors are suitable for renewing tram, metro and suburban rolling stock in place of DC traction motors.

Questions and answers
What power and voltage range do the traction motors cover?
The range is 45–1800 kW at 400–3000 V, with 4–8 poles. The winding of electric train motors allows direct 3 kV DC supply.
Which series should be chosen for a low-floor tram?
DKCBZ rated 50–125 kW and 270 mm high with air surface cooling. It is installed longitudinally or transversely and suits all common track gauges.
Can DC motors on old trams be replaced?
Yes, DKABZ rated 42–85 kW is intended for this. A three-phase stator is fitted into the retained housing of the DC motor without redesigning the bogie.
