Description

Synchronous motors of this line are designed and built to the specific requirements of the customer, so power, speed, installation conditions and drive type are defined for the task and not picked from a ready-made frame-size range. According to the manufacturer, such machines have low operating costs and save energy through high efficiency, stable high-performance operation and minimal maintenance.

The line includes very high-speed versions. They make it possible to do without a gearbox and to couple the motor directly to a compressor or another high-speed machine. Without a gearbox the drive has fewer components that need lubrication, alignment and inspection, and the mechanical losses in the transmission disappear.

Motor parameters are determined from the description of the application, and where needed the manufacturer also offers associated equipment, such as an exciter and a frequency converter. This approach is justified where standard series do not cover the required combination of power and speed, for example on high-speed compressors. The manufacturer's line also includes custom-designed low- and medium-voltage induction motors and the 21-G series.

A synchronous motor with rotor excitation operates at a power factor close to unity or leading. On high-power drives this reduces the reactive power drawn from the plant network. For high-power variable-speed drives the motors are combined with the manufacturer's own medium-voltage frequency converters, namely multilevel TMdrive inverters on IEGT/GCT and load-commutated inverters (LCI). According to power plant experience, the combination of a synchronous motor and an LCI is among the most efficient drive systems. The LCI controls the rotor field through the exciter and the stator current at the same time, so the start is smooth.

The motors are designed to international standards and are supported by the manufacturer's global service network. They are used on centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, including in the oil and gas industry and at LNG plants, on fans and induced-draft fans of power plants, high-power pumps, mills and rolling mills, and on test stands. Supply is possible from the grid or from a medium-voltage frequency converter, the choice depending on whether speed control is needed.

Questions and answers

Can a compressor be driven without a gearbox?

Yes, the line includes very high-speed versions for direct coupling of the motor to a compressor or another high-speed machine. No gearbox is needed in such a drive.

How does a synchronous motor affect the reactive power of the network?

A motor with rotor excitation operates at a power factor close to unity or leading. On high-power drives this reduces the reactive power drawn from the plant network.

Which frequency converters are these motors combined with?

With multilevel TMdrive inverters on IEGT/GCT and load-commutated inverters (LCI). With an LCI the motor starts smoothly, and the LCI controls the rotor field through the exciter.
