Electric AC drive for 150–400 t mining dump trucks (generator, inverters, wheel motors)
A complete AC electric drive for open-pit mining dump trucks with payloads from 150 to 400 t. It includes a traction generator, an AC control group, a dynamic braking unit and wheel motors. The drive replaces a mechanical transmission on open-pit mining dump trucks.

Description
The mining product line dates back to the 1960s, when the first commercially viable electric drive for large mining dump trucks reached the market, and in 1996 the first AC drive for the industry was introduced. Today integrated drives of this type are fitted to more than 10,000 machines, whose combined operating time exceeds 1 billion hours. This is the largest fleet of AC drives for mining equipment in the world.
The drive layout is simple. The diesel engine turns the traction generator, the AC control group distributes the power flows and holds the motor load, the wheel motors produce traction force, and the dynamic braking resistor unit dissipates energy on descents. This layout has no torque converter, cardan shafts, gearbox or differentials, so the number of wearing parts is 75% lower. The result is lower maintenance costs, a higher availability factor and greater productivity of the truck.
The extended electric braking zone, down to a speed close to zero, gives up to 81% speed advantage on descents. The cycle is shorter and the braking mechanisms wear less. The truck works continuously on a 12% grade, reaches up to 64 km/h, does not lose power at an altitude of 3660 m at 33 °C and tolerates air temperatures up to +55 °C. According to the manufacturer, such machines are faster than competitors of the same payload both on the flat and on climbs.
The range covers six payload classes. The 150 t truck has a gross weight of 249 t, an engine up to 1345 kW and a braking power of 2700 hp. Further classes are 200 t (336 t, 1864 kW, 3880 hp), 240 t (392 t, 2013 kW, up to 4300 hp), 320 t (504 t, 2610 kW, 5400 hp) and 360 t (504 t, 2610 kW, 6000 hp). The largest machine, rated 400 t, has a gross weight of 635 t, an engine of 3281 kW, braking of 6600 hp and 59/80R63 tires.
The manufacturer also develops a high-voltage traction system that lets the trucks run from an overhead catenary line, which reduces diesel fuel use and emissions at the mine. For mining companies the drive can be regarded as an equivalent to the traction generators and motors of mining haulage equipment.
