Description
The Evolution Series was developed as a platform for heavy-haul freight, and about 8000 Evolution locomotives are in operation worldwide. The ES44AC appeared in 2005 to meet EPA Tier 2 norms. Its 12-cylinder four-stroke Evolution engine kept the power of the previous 16-cylinder FDL but consumes less fuel and produces fewer emissions. Since 2005 the ES44AC has been regarded as the North American standard for traction characteristics and cost of ownership, and outside North America machines for heavy traffic are built on it.
The ET44AC received a GEVO12-LDD engine for Tier 4 norms. NOx emissions are reduced by 76% and particulate matter by 70%, as the EPA requires, and no exhaust aftertreatment is needed for this. Railways do not buy urea and do not build infrastructure for it. According to the manufacturer, this model was the first 4500 hp locomotive with a medium-speed diesel to meet these norms without aftertreatment.
The ET44AC power is 4500 hp gross (3356 kW) and 4365 hp tractive (3255 kW). It has six driven axles in the C-C arrangement, a mass of up to 196 t, that is 33.6 t per axle, a 1435 mm gauge and AAR Plate M clearance. Starting tractive effort is 890 kN, continuous 739 kN and electric braking up to 436 kN. Total fuel capacity is 20,063 L, usable 18,170 L, so the range between refuelings is large.
The AC transmission has a separate inverter on each axle. This way the locomotive keeps maximum tractive force on worn and uneven track, and if one traction motor fails it continues to operate. The improved cooling system maintains power under the strictest emissions norms. The platform is designed for maximum adhesion on poor-quality track, and experience with about 8000 Evolution machines in many countries has brought its cost of ownership to the level of the best in the class.
For Ukraine the platform is of interest because TE33A Evolution and C30ACi locomotives are already in service with Ukrzaliznytsia. The manufacturer produces the traction motors, generators and converters for them in-house.

Questions and answers
How does ET44AC differ from ES44AC?
ES44AC meets EPA Tier 2 and ET44AC meets Tier 4 without exhaust aftertreatment. NOx emissions are reduced by 76% and particulate matter by 70%.
What tractive effort does ET44AC develop?
Starting tractive effort is 890 kN and continuous is 739 kN. Electric braking provides up to 436 kN.
What is the axle load and track gauge of the locomotive?
A mass of up to 196 t on six axles gives 33.6 t per axle. The locomotive is built for 1435 mm gauge within the AAR Plate M clearance.
