Description
Individual control of the traction motors together with High Adhesion bogies makes it possible to haul heavier trains. Electric braking acts down to a full stop. Wheelslip during starting, on grades and on poor-quality track is sharply reduced, so a train of the same mass can be hauled by fewer locomotives. High traction is determined by the thermal and adhesion capacity of the machine.
The ES44ACi has a 16-cylinder 7FDL16 engine with a high-pressure accumulator (HPCR) fuel system. Its power is 4500 hp gross and 4400 hp tractive at 1050 rpm. Dynamic braking dissipates up to 5900 hp, reduces wear on the wheels and car brake shoes and improves safety on descents. The design is adapted to narrow tunnels, and the cooling system has enough reserve to pass long tunnels. Fuel capacity is 17,980 L.
The manufacturer calls the ES58ACi its most powerful heavy-haul locomotive in service. The four-stroke GEVO V16 with two turbochargers and an intercooler delivers 6000 hp gross and 5750 hp tractive, with a fuel capacity of 23,500 L. According to the manufacturer, three ES58ACi replace four DC-transmission locomotives, and the higher power allows them to work in one consist with such machines. AC transmission with individual control of the traction motors raises tractive effort and the power transmitted to the wheel rim.
Common parameters of both models are as follows. Starting tractive effort 90,718 kgf, continuous 75,300 kgf, peak electric braking 53,070 kgf, axle load 32.5 t, axle formula C-C. The CCA control system provides centralized diagnostics and can switch off an individual traction motor, and the brake is electronic pneumatic.
EVO technology reduces fuel consumption and emissions, cuts downtime and extends intervals between overhauls. Serviceability and high availability of the locomotives help reduce the fleet and make fuller use of existing assets. For the operator this means fewer locomotives for the same freight volume and lower fuel and repair costs.
