Description
All models in the series are fitted with 7FDL engines with turbocharging and electronic fuel injection. These engines have been proven in service at altitudes above 4000 m and at temperatures from −50 to +50 °C. They tolerate cyclic thermal loads well and lose little power at high altitude. Operating costs are low and availability is high. The series is designed for railways with limited axle loads, steep curves and narrow tunnel clearances.
The C20ACi is built on the lightest AC transmission platform in the manufacturer's range, and replaces the C20EMP series. The 7FDL8 engine develops 2250 hp at 1050 rpm, with an inverter on each axle, and electric braking acts down to zero speed. Starting tractive effort is up to 40,000 kgf, electric braking up to 20,000 kgf, axle load 17.5 t, axle formula C-C, and fuel capacity 3000–4600 L. The CCA control system provides centralized diagnostics and can switch off an individual traction motor, and the brake is electronic pneumatic.
The C30ACi is intended for heavier trains on lines with light axle loads, and it uses all the AC technologies the manufacturer applies in heavy-haul service. The 7FDL12 engine produces 3300 hp gross and 3100 hp tractive. Starting tractive effort is up to 54,880 kgf and continuous 46,900 kgf, electric braking up to 29,368 kgf, axle load 18.5–21 t and fuel 5000–8400 L. In terms of traction capacity, each of the two AC models replaces up to two DC-transmission locomotives. Locomotives of this platform (C30ACi) have been supplied to Ukrzaliznytsia.
The C21–C25EMP have AC-DC transmission and a BrightStar microprocessor system that monitors traction motor temperature. The 7FDL12 engine is configured up to 3300 hp gross, with 2300–3000 hp available for traction. Starting tractive effort is 32,000 kgf and continuous 26,500 kgf, electric braking 22,400 kgf, axle load 16–20 t and fuel 4500–6000 L. Overhaul intervals on these machines have been extended.
