Description

Onvia Cab is a modular onboard ETCS system installed on any type of rolling stock: freight and passenger locomotives, EMUs and DMUs, new trains and the existing fleet (retrofit). The trackside part, Onvia Control, covers levels 1 and 2, automatic train operation (ATO) and ERTMS Hybrid Level 3. For compatibility with legacy systems the onboard part has several specific transmission modules (STM), including for the first fully homologated equipment of Corridor A. The onboard part is ready for installation both on new trains and on the existing fleet.

The ERTMS/ETCS standard was created to make border crossing easier, open the signalling market, raise commercial speeds, shorten headways, reduce maintenance costs and improve safety. The manufacturer has supplied equipment for more than 30 years in line with the latest European interoperability standards. The system is scaled and configured for regional, commuter, mainline and high-speed service, for trackside and onboard projects. Delivery is carried out by local engineering teams supported by global centres, for national and cross-border rollout programmes.

According to the manufacturer, it was the first in the world to certify onboard and trackside ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2 equipment, the current interoperability standard, and to implement the first Hybrid Level 3 project with virtual blocks to raise capacity. Automatic train operation (ATO) with moving block and train positioning is compatible with ERTMS for commuter and mainline service. Also available are platform screen door systems, LTE digital radio, digital interlocking and an odometry system independent of weather conditions (Norway). Example projects are high-speed lines in France, high-capacity lines in Italy, Norway, the first ETCS deployment on commuter lines in India, the first deployment in Australia and rollout on 600 trains in South Africa.

Digital signalling and ATO increase the capacity of existing lines without building new tracks. ETCS is responsible for interoperability and safety, and ATO for performance through higher capacity and network optimisation. The combination suits passenger and freight service, and rollout can be done in stages under national and cross-border plans.
