GCP: generator control panel (excitation, protection, synchronization) for turbogenerators
Generator Control Panel (GCP) is a complete panel for excitation, electrical protection and synchronization of turbogenerators. It consists of standardized modules matched to the generator, the plant scheme and grid requirements. Used on new steam and gas turbine units and when replacing obsolete cabinets on existing machines.

Description
The Generator Control Panel (GCP) gathers in one panel everything needed to connect a turbogenerator to the grid. The manufacturer describes it as a compact modular standardized panel. The composition and design are matched to the chosen generator, the electrical scheme of the plant and grid requirements, so the panel does not depend on the type of prime mover and suits various plant schemes. Instead of separate excitation, protection and synchronization cabinets, one set arrives at the site.
Excitation feeds the rotor winding with direct current and sets the generator voltage. For the GCP, complete THYNE excitation systems are supplied for static and brushless exciters. They include a field current regulator (FCR) and an automatic voltage regulator (AVR), there are dual-channel versions and a built-in power system stabilizer (PSS) that damps power oscillations. For brushless machines, excitation systems are provided that start the unit from a static frequency converter (SFC).
The protection of the turbogenerator unit is performed by a full set of standardized functions on the manufacturer's own protection relays. They trip the unit on internal faults and abnormal conditions. The control automation includes, for example, brush monitoring and switching of synchronization zones, and has an interface to dispatch centers. The set is completed by an independent synchronizing device that matches voltage, frequency and phase before the circuit breaker closes, and separating this device from the rest of the automation gives independent control of grid connection. Operational control and display of all unit data are brought out to a local touch panel installed in the generator bay.
The digital devices are built on the HIPASE platform (HIPASE-E, -P, -S) with a single engineering tool, so excitation, protection and synchronization are configured in one environment, and parameters between functions are coordinated without separate programs for each device. Data exchange runs over IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP and OPC UA, and the panel fits into existing plant control systems. Applications: new steam and gas turbine units, industrial CHP plants, and replacement of obsolete excitation, protection and synchronization cabinets on existing generators.

Questions and answers
What functions does the GCP panel perform?
The panel combines THYNE excitation with AVR and FCR regulators, electrical generator protection and an independent synchronizing device. Operational control is brought out to a local touch panel.
What protocols do the digital devices of the GCP support?
Devices on the HIPASE platform work over IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP and OPC UA. A single engineering tool is used for configuration.
Can the GCP be installed on an existing generator?
Yes, the panel is used to replace obsolete excitation, protection and synchronization cabinets on existing generators. It also suits new steam and gas turbine units and industrial CHP plants.
