SILCOSIL, silicone composite insulators for overhead lines, substations and railways 1.5–1000 kV
SILCOSIL is a range of composite insulators with a silicone rubber sheath for AC and DC voltages of 1.5–1000 kV. They are produced by the manufacturer's Swiss company for overhead lines, substations and railways. The programme covers suspension and tension insulators with loads up to 1000 kN, line post, braced line post, station post, hollow core and railway insulators.

Description
According to the manufacturer, the company has worked with composite insulators for over 40 years and from the very beginning has used only silicone rubber for the sheath. SILCOSIL has been produced since 1975. In 1979 the first railway composite insulators appeared in the Lötschberg tunnel, in 1990 suspension and tension insulators for 420 kV, and in 1998 the world's first braced line post insulator for 420 kV. Production is certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018.
For distribution networks there are long rod and line post insulators for 1.5–145 kV, stay insulators and fuse cutouts for 12, 24 and 36 kV. Insulating cross-arms are needed for compact overhead lines. The conductor is fixed to the cross-arm, so under wind it does not swing sideways, and the clearances can be reduced. The width of the corridor is reduced by 50 % or more, the electromagnetic field strength near the line falls, and the transmission capacity, according to the company, grows by 15–20 %.
The insulator consists of end fittings, a fibreglass rod and a sheath. The end fittings are made to IEC 60120, IEC 60471, IEC 61466 or ANSI. Up to 70 kN they are cast from steel, for larger loads they are forged, for the contact line they are made of aluminium, and hot-dip galvanising is carried out to IEC 60383. The rods are made by pultrusion from E-CR glass resistant to brittle fracture, with a diameter of 14–38 mm for long rod and 38–170 mm for post insulators. The sheath of HTV silicone with aluminium trihydrate combines tracking and erosion resistance with retention and transfer of hydrophobicity. The housings are formed by injection moulding at a pressure from 1500 bar, by the modular method or by automated continuous injection moulding ACIM.
The end fittings are crimped on eight-jaw machines with control of pressure, stroke and acoustic emission. The failing load exceeds the specified mechanical load SML by about 20 %. Routine tests are carried out at 50–80 % SML, and the results are stored for ten years. The insulators are designed to IEC 61109, IEC 61952 and IEC 62231, and the tests are carried out in the company's own high-voltage laboratory.
