Substation post insulators, porcelain and hybrid, up to 800 kV
Post insulators for AC and DC substations up to 800 kV are made in porcelain, hybrid and composite versions to BS, IEC and ANSI. They are installed under busbars, busbar supports and disconnectors, and are also supplied to high-voltage apparatus manufacturers as components.

Description
The porcelain range consists of high-strength solid core post insulators, fully tested and approved to IEC 60273 and IEC 60168. Alongside standard products, the factory makes special designs to the customer's requirements. Porcelain across the range is made both by wet and by isostatic (dry) pressing. Both methods are used across the range, from small insulators to long columns of high voltage classes. This technology makes it possible to produce long insulators with high bending strength, and bending is what determines the work of a post insulator under a busbar or a disconnector contact.
For British networks the company holds National Grid type registration for post insulators of 132, 275 and 400 kV. Registration means these types have been approved and cleared for use at National Grid substations. For substations in other countries, insulators are made to IEC or ANSI for the specific apparatus and layout. For manufacturers of high-voltage apparatus, the company supplies insulators as components, to their drawings and requirements.
A hybrid insulator has a porcelain core and a silicone rubber housing. Porcelain provides mechanical rigidity, silicone hydrophobicity. This version is fitted in heavily polluted areas when the risk of flashovers must be reduced without moving to a fully polymer design. The purely composite post insulators, hollow and solid up to 750 kV, are described in a separate catalogue item.
The factory laboratory tests insulators in bending on a 300 kN·m cantilever machine, in tension and compression up to 1000 kN, and with high voltage. Porcelain is checked by dye penetrant and ultrasonic flaw detection, fittings are controlled for zinc coating thickness, and dimensions are checked separately. Results are issued as reports with expert analysis, and the laboratory can also be engaged for third-party testing.
Together with the insulators the company supplies substation clamps and connectors up to 500 kV, so the busbar assembly is supplied by one manufacturer. The head office and factory are in Tunstall, Staffordshire, and the company is part of a Swedish group. Production and laboratory operate under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and the occupational health and safety system is aligned with ISO 45001.

Questions and answers
What voltage are the post insulators used up to?
In AC and DC substations up to 800 kV. Types for 132, 275 and 400 kV are registered with National Grid.
To which standards are the porcelain post insulators made?
Solid porcelain insulators are made to IEC 60273 and IEC 60168. The whole range conforms to BS, IEC and ANSI standards.
What conditions is the hybrid version intended for?
Heavily polluted areas. The porcelain core provides rigidity and the silicone housing hydrophobicity, which reduces the risk of flashovers.
