Composite long rod and line post insulators with silicone housing up to 400 kV

The composite insulators have a fibreglass rod and a finned silicone rubber housing. The range covers suspension and strain long rod insulators with mechanical load up to 600 kN and line post insulators up to 400 kV. They are used on overhead lines in distribution and transmission networks, including polluted and coastal areas.

Description

The company has made silicone composite insulators since 2000 and, according to the company, is the leading supplier of such products for UK distribution networks. Demand initially rested on low- and medium-voltage long rod insulators. The programme later added suspension and strain rods of higher loads and line post insulators for high-voltage overhead lines. Today the programme includes long rods with loads up to 600 kN, composite line post insulators up to 400 kV and special products developed together with National Grid for the T-Pylon.

The load-bearing element is a fibreglass rod. A finned silicone rubber housing is moulded onto it, and the end fittings are crimped onto the rod. The rod carries the mechanical load, while the housing provides insulation and creepage distance. Silicone is hydrophobic, which gives good performance in polluted and coastal areas. Low weight compared with porcelain simplifies lifting and installation on the pole.

For compact 132 kV lines, Electricity North West was supplied with composite post and strain insulators together with fittings developed and agreed for the OPPC conductor. For National Grid's world-first 400 kV T-Pylon pilot project, the line to the Hinkley Point nuclear power plant, the company created insulating diamond-shaped structures and conventional strings for very high combined mechanical loads. The assemblies underwent modelling, prototyping and full electrical tests. For the Smartwires and UK Power Networks project, fibreglass post insulators of increased diameter, 160 mm, were made with strict deflection requirements.

Mechanical and electromechanical tests are carried out on 500 and 1000 kN machines and on a 300 kN·m cantilever machine. High-voltage tests are performed by the company's own laboratory. Designers work in 3D, calculate components by finite element analysis and print prototypes on a 3D printer. In this way the shape, dimensions and mounting of a product are agreed with the customer before tooling is made. This applies both to standard rods and to special designs for non-standard structures. For such structures, the combined loads on the whole assembly are calculated separately, as was done for the T-Pylon.

Questions and answers

What mechanical load do the long rod insulators withstand?

Suspension and strain long rod insulators are made for mechanical loads up to 600 kN. Tests are carried out on 500 and 1000 kN machines.

Up to what voltage are the composite line post insulators available?

Line post insulators are made up to 400 kV. For the 400 kV National Grid T-Pylon pilot line the company developed special insulating structures.

What materials is the insulator made of?

The rod is fibreglass, the housing is finned silicone rubber, and the end fittings are crimped onto the rod.
