Hollowcore / Solidcore composite substation post insulators up to 750 kV AC/DC

Hollowcore and Solidcore are composite substation post insulators with a silicone rubber housing for voltages up to 750 kV AC and DC. They are installed in place of porcelain post insulators in existing substations and used in new construction.

Description

The range was created after long development work in composite substation insulation. The development is confirmed by extensive testing, and the programme covers a full set of composite substation post insulators. Each insulator is designed to the exact customer requirements for height, connection dimensions, mechanical loads and creepage distance. The composite insulator is therefore matched to the existing support structure or apparatus where porcelain stood before.

In the solid version (solidcore) the load-bearing element is a solid fibreglass rod. The hollow version (hollowcore) is built on a large-diameter fibreglass tube. The tube gives high bending stiffness at lower weight. Both versions cover the same voltage range, and the choice between them is determined by the column height and the load from the busbar or apparatus. A ribbed silicone rubber housing is applied to the rod or tube, and metal flanges are fixed at the ends, through which the insulator is attached to the support and the apparatus.

These insulators work best in heavily polluted areas, for example on the coast. The hydrophobic silicone surface sharply reduces the number of short-term flashovers over the contaminated surface. Regular washing and cleaning of the insulation becomes unnecessary. For existing substations in such areas, replacing porcelain with composite removes insulator washing from the work schedule.

Manufacturing takes a short time, and the flexible design provides an option for any electrical and mechanical scenario confirmed by extensive testing. For National Grid in the USA the company designed, manufactured and supplied composite post insulators for a 500 kV DC substation to replace porcelain ones. The new products were made to the connection dimensions of the existing porcelain insulators. The work had to fit into a short substation outage window.

The insulators are tested in the company's own mechanical and high-voltage laboratory. Alongside composite ones, the company also produces porcelain and hybrid post insulators, as well as substation clamps and connectors. Production operates to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and occupational safety is aligned with ISO 45001. The plant is located in Tunstall, Staffordshire, on the Scotia Business Park site. The company belongs to a Swedish group.

Questions and answers

How do Hollowcore and Solidcore differ?

Solidcore has a solid fibreglass rod, while Hollowcore has a large-diameter fibreglass tube with high bending stiffness at lower weight. Both versions have a silicone housing and work up to 750 kV.

Can they replace porcelain post insulators in an existing substation?

Yes, the range is intended precisely for such replacement and for new construction. Height, connection dimensions, loads and creepage distance are adapted to the customer requirements.

Are they used in DC substations?

Yes, the insulators are designed for AC and DC up to 750 kV. For National Grid in the USA the company supplied insulators for a 500 kV DC substation.
