HDPE high-density polyethylene pin insulators 15–36 kV
HDPE pin insulators made of high-density polyethylene are intended for 15–36 kV distribution overhead lines. They are a light and strong alternative to traditional porcelain pin insulators and do not shatter. The range is installed on new lines and as a replacement for porcelain, including on salty coasts, in the tropics and in areas with vandalism.

Description
The product has received industry awards. The material is made to the company's own formulation. It was developed in 3D, the material formulation was worked out separately and extensive testing was carried out. HDPE is hydrophobic, and the insulator shape gives an increased creepage distance. This lets the range work in any conditions and especially well in polluted areas. The hydrophobic surface sharply reduces leakage currents and touch-potential problems at the pole.
The material has high tracking resistance and chemical resistance. The insulator does not shatter and withstands impacts, so it can be installed where porcelain gets smashed by vandals. It holds torsion well. Low weight makes lifting to the pole and installation easier. Moulding is void-free with a short production cycle. Production has a low carbon footprint, and the insulator itself is 100 % recyclable and designed for a long service life.
The sizes conform to ANSI. The 55-3 with C-neck has a creepage distance of 180 mm, a dry 60 Hz flashover voltage of 60 kV, 35 kV under rain, impulse 100/125 kV and puncture 160 kV. The 55-4 with F-neck has 300 mm, 80/45 kV, 125/190 kV and 180 kV respectively. The 55-5 gives 400 mm, 90/60 kV, 140/200 kV and 180 kV. The largest, 55-6, has 535 mm, 105/70 kV, 155/200 kV and 200 kV.
Cantilever strength is the same for all versions, 10 kN. The radio interference level is below 10 µV. The pin hole is made to ANSI 1″ or BS 3288 Fig 16, depending on the pin installed on the line. The size is selected according to the line voltage class and the pollution level along the route.
The insulators are produced to British standards and ANSI, and supply to IEC is possible. They are therefore installed both in networks operating to BS and where ANSI is accepted. A datasheet and installation instructions are available for the whole 15–36 kV range. They are made at the company's plant in Tunstall, Staffordshire, where designers and a laboratory are also based. The insulators are used on new overhead lines and when replacing porcelain pin insulators on existing lines.

Questions and answers
What creepage distances are available in the HDPE range?
The four ANSI sizes have creepage distances of 180, 300, 400 and 535 mm. The smallest is 55-3 and the largest is 55-6.
What are the mechanical and electrical strength of the insulator?
Cantilever strength of all versions is 10 kN. Puncture voltage is from 160 to 200 kV depending on the size.
What pin is the hole made for?
For an ANSI 1″ or BS 3288 Fig 16 pin. The insulators are produced to British standards and ANSI, and supply to IEC is possible.
