Traction generators for locomotives (1500–4000 hp) and 260–400 t mining dump trucks (1800–2700 kVA)
Traction generators for electric-drive locomotives and mining dump trucks are coupled directly to the diesel engine. They convert its mechanical energy into electricity for the traction motors, and the output is rectified to direct current. Dump truck versions are rated 1800–2700 kVA.

Description
The locomotive version is intended for shunting locomotives, rail grinding trains and locomotives for short main-line hauls, both new and rebuilt. Two layouts are possible. In the first, two generators are mounted on the engine: the main traction generator on the main output shaft and an auxiliary generator driven from a power take-off shaft at the front of the engine. In the second, the traction and auxiliary generators are assembled in one enclosure on a common shaft, which matters when space and mass are limited. Engine power is 1500–4000 hp, rectified voltage is 700–1250 V, and rectified current is up to 4800 A.
The traction generator with separate excitation is built as an eight-pole horizontal two-bearing AC synchronous machine, with the stator in a frame and a rotor with slip rings and brushes. Both bearings are lubricated periodically, and the bearing housing on the non-drive side is insulated against shaft stray currents. For brush excitation the manufacturer produces the DVR100T digital regulator. It is a PWM regulator on MOSFETs powered from the battery; it delivers up to 80 A continuously and 100 A briefly and operates in AVR and FCR modes.
The version for mining dump trucks with an AC drive is designed for machines with a payload of 260–400 t and engines of 2000–4000 hp. Voltage is 1500–2000 V AC, frequency is 120 Hz, speed is 650–1900 rpm with variable speed, and after rectification up to 2800 V DC. The generator is single or double bearing and is supplied to customer requirements. All windings have class H insulation with VPI impregnation, and the windings are reinforced for thyristor and IGBT drives. Cooling is by self-ventilation or by air supplied from the machine's system; excitation is brushless, with a reinforced rotating rectifier. The structure withstands shock loads up to 5 g on any axis, and it is lightened to increase the dump truck's payload.
The manufacturer has been supplying traction generators for mining dump trucks for almost 30 years. Applications include shunting and main-line locomotives, track machinery and mining dump trucks with electromechanical transmission. The generators are produced at the plant in Mankato, Minnesota, USA.
