Description
The Compact Hydro division equips small and medium hydropower plants with its own generators within a water-to-wire scope of supply. The manufacturer regards as small the stations with units up to 15 MW for axial and Kaplan turbines and up to 30 MW for Francis and Pelton turbines. For mini hydropower plants (Mini Compact Hydro) standardization and parameterization are taken further while the level of performance is preserved.
Compact Hydro generators are built as synchronous or induction machines. The shaft can be horizontal or vertical, cooling by air or water, excitation brushless. The unit output ranges from 20 kW to 30 MW depending on the turbine type. The voltage is low and medium, and for Hydromatrix there are LV and HV versions.
In small units with radial-axial turbines the runner, as a rule, sits directly on the generator shaft. The design is compact and maintenance is simpler. The turbine-generator unit is supplied fully assembled and ready for installation. All units are tested at the factory, have reduced transport dimensions and short installation times.
The modular concept covers the electrical part of the powerhouse as well. This is unit control, protection, excitation and synchronization, cable networks and power evacuation. The division can offer hydromechanical equipment as well as electrical equipment, in full or in part, up to a unit output of 30 MW. For reference, small hydropower plants with Francis turbines cover the range from about 500 kW to 30 MW. Within axial turbines the manufacturer lists several unit types. Compact axial units work at heads up to 45 m and outputs up to 15 MW. Bulb units are designed for heads up to 15 m, PIT units for heads up to 12 m and outputs up to 10 MW. For very low heads up to 5 m there are belt-driven bulb units with outputs up to 600 kW.
According to the brochure, the worldwide installed fleet of Compact Hydro exceeds 23,000 MW. Such generators are installed at diversion-type and run-of-river small hydropower plants, at hydropower plants on irrigation canals and penstocks, and in stand-alone power supply. A separate application is generator replacement during refurbishment of small stations.
