Description

Two-pole hydrogen-cooled turbogenerators occupy the upper part of the output range, 220–350 MVA. They are installed on steam turbine and combined-cycle units where maximum efficiency and compact dimensions are required. The manufacturer develops and builds such machines in Weiz (Austria). Production there began in the 1950s, and the first machine dates from 1958. Since then more than 1,380 turbogenerators with a total output of over 147,000 MVA have been built for more than 75 countries.

As a cooling medium, hydrogen removes heat better than air and has a low density. This gives a compact design, minimum losses and the highest possible efficiency. The internal volume of the generator is hermetically separated from the atmosphere, so dust, salt, moisture and aerosols do not affect the machine. And because there is no oxygen, corona discharges do not damage the high-voltage stator insulation.

The rotor is made from a solid shaft forging obtained from a vacuum-cast ingot, which gives a high level of operational safety. Heat from the active parts is taken up by hydrogen inside the sealed stator casing and then goes to gas-water heat exchangers. For filling and emptying, a gas system on compressed air, inert gas and hydrogen is used, so the procedure is staged and controlled.

The technical data according to the brochure are as follows. Frequency 50 Hz, speed 3,000 rpm, voltage 15.75 kV, static excitation, output up to 350 MVA. More than 20 hydrogen-cooled turbogenerators have been supplied. Historical reference points include the first machine of 1970 rated 180 MVA, 10.5 kV, then 1972 with 330 MVA, 21 kV, 1973 with 850 MVA, 21 kV and 1981 with 470 MVA, 21 kV. For stations up to 220 MVA the manufacturer offers air cooling, and hydrogen cooling takes over at the next step of the range. These data are given as in the source and fall outside the current 220–350 MVA range.

Such turbogenerators are used on condensing and cogeneration steam turbine units, in combined-cycle plants and when replacing generators at existing thermal power plants.

Questions and answers

What output range are these turbogenerators built for?

220–350 MVA. According to the brochure, frequency 50 Hz, speed 3,000 rpm, voltage 15.75 kV.

Why is hydrogen cooling better than air cooling?

Hydrogen removes heat better and has a low density, so the machine is more compact and losses are minimal. The sealed casing keeps out dust, salt and moisture, and without oxygen corona discharges do not harm the stator insulation.

What excitation and rotor design are used?

Excitation is static. The rotor is made from a solid shaft forging obtained from a vacuum-cast ingot.
