Description

Motor-generators are intended for pumped-storage plants. In generating mode the machine produces electricity, and in motoring mode it drives the pump-turbine and pumps water into the upper reservoir. The manufacturer states that it has supplied pumped-storage motor-generators of up to 360 MVA with fixed or variable rotational speed, with one or two directions of rotation. Variable-speed motor-generators are noted separately, the reference site being the Goldisthal pumped-storage plant (Germany) with 380 MVA units, the first machines of this type outside Japan.

The manufacturer has experience of all unit arrangements: a rigid connection to a reversible pump-turbine or operation on a separate turbine and pump (ternary unit). Starting into pumping mode is by a static frequency converter (SFC), a pony motor, a back-to-back scheme or from the turbine. The pumped-storage brochure describes three basic schemes, namely reversible pump-turbines with a fixed-speed motor-generator, ternary units, and reversible pump-turbines with a variable-speed motor-generator.

In the variable-speed version the machine is asynchronized and works with AC excitation. Variable speed gives the best efficiency at variable heads. This scheme gives smooth regulation of flow and output in both turbine and pumping modes and additional grid services, including virtual inertia. For these units the manufacturer's electrical division integrates starting frequency converters and AC excitation systems.

The set includes excitation, protection (HIPASE-P supports SFC protection functions), synchronization and unit control systems. The manufacturer reports deliveries of more than 550 pumped-storage units with a total output of almost 40 000 MW. Among the deliveries listed in the brochure are two variable-speed motor-generators of 330 MVA each.

The machine works in two modes, generator and motor (pump), with one or two directions of rotation. The motor-generator works both with a reversible pump-turbine and in a ternary unit, and the choice of scheme determines the starting method and the output regulation range. All these schemes are selected for the head of the plant and the required grid operating mode. Applications are new pumped-storage plants, expansion and reconstruction of existing stations, balancing of renewables and frequency regulation.

Questions and answers

What rating are pumped-storage motor-generators made up to?

The manufacturer has supplied machines up to 360 MVA with fixed or variable rotational speed. The variable-speed reference site, the Goldisthal pumped-storage plant, has 380 MVA units.

How is the unit started in pumping mode?

By a static frequency converter (SFC), a pony motor, a back-to-back scheme or from the turbine. There may be one or two directions of rotation.

What pumped-storage unit arrangements are possible?

A rigid connection to a reversible pump-turbine or operation on a separate turbine and pump (ternary unit). There are also reversible pump-turbines with a variable-speed motor-generator.
