Vertical hydro generator up to 840 MVA
Vertical hydro generators are synchronous machines coupled to vertical Francis, Kaplan and Pelton hydro turbines and converting the mechanical rotation energy into electrical energy through an excitation system. The output range of vertical machines reaches 840 MVA. This is the main generator type for large and medium hydropower plants.

Description
Vertical hydro generators are coupled to vertical hydro turbines of the Francis, Kaplan and Pelton types. The generator is designed for a specific plant, taking into account the head, flow and required speed, so the range covers all outputs and speeds. These include slow-speed machines for low-head Kaplan turbines and high-speed units for Pelton turbines at high-head hydropower plants. The manufacturer states an output range of vertical machines of up to 840 MVA.
According to the manufacturer, more than 1 800 large generators at more than 700 power plants with a total output of more than 130 GW are installed or under construction worldwide. The total fleet of hydro generators exceeds 160 000 MVA. The largest units in Europe and America were made at the same works. The design is compact, with high efficiency and a long service life. This is achieved with electromagnetic and mechanical calculation methods (FEM, CFD for cooling systems), optimized manufacturing technologies and carefully selected materials. The manufacturer has its own welding and machining capacities, and its structure includes historical electrical engineering brands.
The vertical design has also become the basis for motor-generators of pumped-storage plants. Such machines have been supplied for outputs of up to 360 MVA with constant or variable speed and one or two directions of rotation. The scope of supply usually includes proprietary THYNE/HIPASE excitation systems, protection, synchronization, busducts and a unit control system, as well as online monitoring tools. Excitation is static (THYNE) or brushless, insulation VPI/GVPI. For low heads the manufacturer also offers PIT generators connected to a horizontal turbine shaft through a step-up gearbox, usually up to 17 MVA at 500–900 rpm. Motor-generators are started by static frequency converters (SFC), a pony motor, the back-to-back method or from the turbine. There are also converter stations with an induction motor and a synchronous single-phase generator for 16 2/3 Hz railway systems, as well as permanent magnet generators for small hydro units.
Applications are new large turnkey (water-to-wire) hydropower plants, replacement and modernization of generators at existing plants with an increase of output, and complete supply of electromechanical equipment. In addition to new machines, rehabilitation of generators at operating plants is carried out. According to the manufacturer, modernization of a hydropower plant can increase the output by up to 30 %.
