Mitrac Drive traction generators, 300–800 kW, for regional trains and locomotives
Mitrac Drive traction generators rated from 300 to 800 kW for regional trains and locomotives with electric transmission. They are mounted on the diesel power pack. The generator feeds the traction converter and the traction motors.

Description
Traction generators rated from 300 to 800 kW are part of the Mitrac Drive portfolio alongside traction motors of 50–1600 kW and gearboxes. They are adapted for regional trains and locomotives. The electric transmission scheme works as follows: the diesel engine turns the generator, and traction is produced by electric motors. There is no mechanical transmission between the diesel and the bogies, and its role is performed by the electric circuit.
The generator is mounted on the diesel power pack of the rolling stock. It converts the mechanical energy of the internal combustion engine into electrical energy for the traction converter and the traction motors.
Such generators are used in diesel-electric and hybrid multiple units and in dual-mode and multi-diesel locomotives. A special case is locomotives with a last-mile function. The diesel generator module lets such a locomotive work on non-electrified sidings where there is no overhead line.
The generators are developed at the same competence centres as the traction motors, in Ornans, Västerås and Vienna. They are connected into the Mitrac traction chain together with Mitrac Power converters and control systems, so the generator, converter, motors and gearboxes are selected as a single system. The motors in the portfolio are asynchronous and permanent magnet synchronous, open and closed, with self-ventilation, forced ventilation or water cooling.
The manufacturer supports the generators throughout the entire life cycle. Maintenance, repair, spare parts and upgrades are available for all rolling stock, subsystems and components. For selection, these data are still lacking. Only the power range, from 300 to 800 kW, has been published. The types (synchronous or asynchronous), voltages and weights of specific versions are not given in the source, so selection requires an enquiry with the parameters of the diesel and the traction chain. The Mitrac Drive portfolio also includes gearboxes of three types, fully sprung, partly sprung and unsprung, and motors rated from 50 to 1600 kW. In such a configuration the generator becomes part of a single traction chain with motors, converters and control, and service, spare parts and upgrades cover all these units.

Questions and answers
What power do Mitrac Drive traction generators have?
From 300 to 800 kW. They are adapted for regional trains and locomotives with electric transmission.
Where are these generators used?
In diesel-electric and hybrid multiple units, dual-mode and multi-diesel locomotives, and locomotives with a last-mile function. The diesel generator module makes it possible to enter non-electrified sidings.
What is needed to select a generator?
The parameters of the diesel and the traction chain. The types, voltages and weights of the versions are not given in the source, so selection is made on request.
