Description

Railway systems at 16 2/3 Hz operate in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and a number of other countries. The traction network there is supplied with single-phase current at reduced frequency. The source is either dedicated hydropower plant generators or electromechanical converters that link the three-phase 50 Hz grid with the single-phase traction network. For both cases the manufacturer offers single-phase generators and converter stations.

Single-phase hydro generators work directly on the traction network. A converter set consists of an induction motor and a single-phase synchronous generator. Such a motor-generator set transfers power between the general power system and the railway.

For these machines the manufacturer supplies its own automation designed for a frequency of 16.7 Hz. The HIPASE-E excitation regulator has a built-in firing pulse controller and works with single-phase and three-phase synchronous machines in the frequency range of 10–440 Hz. The HIPASE-P protection of generators and transformers is made for 50, 60 and 16.7 Hz. The HIPASE-S synchronization system is also produced in a separate version for 7 circuit breakers for railway applications. The excitation regulator keeps the voltage and reactive power of the machine within set limits. Synchronization is needed to connect the set to the traction network busbars without shocks. The protection of generators and transformers disconnects the equipment in fault conditions. For single-phase and three-phase machines at frequencies below industrial frequency, such automation needs a separate design, so it is built specifically for 16.7 Hz.

Specific outputs and voltages are not given in the sources. A low frequency requires a larger magnetic core for the same output than at 50 Hz, so such machines are designed individually. They are made to order, so the parameters of the generator, motor and automation are agreed for a specific station or substation together with the requirements of the railway power company.

Such machines are used at hydropower plants of railway power companies and at converter substations of 16.7 Hz traction networks. A separate direction is the modernization of existing units at stations where the traction network already runs at this frequency. The excitation regulator, protection and synchronization are offered for the same frequency.
