Description
Traction generators are intended for diesel-electric locomotives and mining dump trucks with electric transmission. For railways they are made for shunting locomotives, rail grinding machines and locomotives for short main-line haulage, both new and modernised.
In the dual arrangement, the main traction generator is driven from the output shaft of the diesel engine, and the auxiliary generator from the power take-off shaft at the front of the engine. In the combined arrangement, the traction and auxiliary generators are housed in one casing on a common shaft, which is convenient where dimensions and weight are critical. The choice between the two arrangements depends on the free space in the engine room and the permissible weight of the unit. The railway range covers diesel engines of 1500–4000 hp, rectified voltage of 700–1250 V and current up to 4800 A. The design is rated for vibration, contamination and thermal cycling under constant acceleration and braking.
For mining dump trucks of 260–400 t payload with AC drive, the generators are matched to diesel engines of 2000–4000 hp. Voltage is 1500–2000 V AC (up to 2800 V DC after rectification), power 1800–2700 kVA, frequency 120 Hz, variable rotational speed 650–1900 rpm. The windings are designed to work with thyristor and IGBT AC drives, and all winding assemblies are insulated with class H materials with vacuum pressure impregnation.
Excitation is brushless, with a reinforced rotating rectifier, and cooling is self-ventilated or by air supplied through the customer's ducting. The generators withstand shock loads of up to 5 g along any axis. They are produced in single-bearing and two-bearing designs with mounting to customer requirements, and the weight is optimised to increase payload.
The generators are produced by the American division of the manufacturer, which since 2024 has worked in one group with the European generator plant. Service and repair are carried out by the group's workshops. All the stated parameters are specified for the particular machine, diesel engine and drive scheme: for locomotives the range corresponds to diesel engines of 1500–4000 hp, and for dump trucks of 260–400 t with AC drive diesel engines of 2000–4000 hp are required. They are used in locomotive building, locomotive modernisation and mining equipment.

Questions and answers
Which locomotives are these traction generators intended for?
For shunting locomotives, rail grinding machines and locomotives for short main-line haulage with diesel engines of 1500–4000 hp. Rectified voltage is 700–1250 V and current is up to 4800 A.
What parameters do the generators for mining dump trucks have?
For dump trucks of 260–400 t with AC drive, voltage is 1500–2000 V and power is 1800–2700 kVA at 120 Hz. Rotational speed is variable, 650–1900 rpm, with a 2000–4000 hp diesel engine.
How do the dual and combined arrangements differ?
In the dual arrangement the main generator sits on the output shaft of the diesel engine, and the auxiliary one is driven from the power take-off shaft. In the combined arrangement both generators sit in one casing on a common shaft, which saves space and weight.
